In 1788 Henry McCullam acquired Lot 2 in Newcastle, 135 acres stretching in a northerly direction from where the approach to the Morrisey Bridge is now located (near 1 Jane St.) back to about the Chaplin Island & Beaverbrook Rds. intersection. The developing Town of Newcastle grew up on and around the southern end of Henry's lot, and we have even today streets which bear a distinctly MacCulliam name, in the old section of town, all of which are located on what was once Henry's property: Henry St. McCallum Blvd Jane St. (Henry had a daughter Jane, m. Wm. Davidson, Jr.) Mary St. (daughter Mary m. i] Hugh Hamill, & ii] Thomas Vondy, Sr.) Thomas St. ( a number of them; probably a brother, a nephew, and possibly a son) George St. (Henry has a son George) Ellen St. (The Ellen McCullam who married John McKenzie was probably Henry's daughter) My theory (or maybe just a wish) is that this is more than a coincidence and that somehow the names of Henry & his kin were memorialized by whoever got to name the streets. If so, it would go a long way towards establishing the fact that my g/g/g grandmother, Ellen, was Henry's daughter. Does anybody have, or know where I can find, information on the origin of street names in Newcastle? Many thanks, Jim MacKenzie
