    3. Hi: I am seeking information on William Babcock, who was an Empire Loyalist who came to NB in 1783, settled on the Miramichi and married Margaret Pierson in 1795 in Newcastle, NB. I am not sure of the spelling of Margaret's last name, it could be Pearson or some other spelling. It appears that they had at least 6 children, only one of which I have been able to trace with certainty, he being Benjamin Babcock who married "MARIA GORMAN" and moved to the Restigouche area. I would be very interested on who the parents of Maria were. William was still alive in the 1851 census for Northumberland Co. and is shown as: 1851 Census for Blackville, Parish, Northumberland Co., NB William Babcock, age 95, born USA, Pauper/infirm/old age, date of entry 1816 The 1816 date of entry is misleading because we know he was in the Province in 1783, we know the ship he arrived in and the land grants he received, it is possible me returned to the USA for a time. In 1851 he was living with Mary Arbo a widow and her 3 sons, ? is it possible she was one of his daughters? Here is a bit of info I have on William: WILLIAM BABCOCK (b. c.1755) left NY , and was a Loyalist to Saint John NB on the ship "Bridgewater" in 1783..William was a carpenter from Orange County,NY..He served in 2nd Battalion,New Jersey Volunteers. William was single when he came to NB, per land petition. He filed for land in 1785 at Burton, NB, then later in 1788 for land on Miramichi River,Northumberland county,NB. He married on August 23, 1795 at Newcastle, NB , to Margaret Pierson,of Newcastle Parish,NB. In land petition of Sept 5,1796,at Miramichi, it states that William had been on the Miramichi river for 11 years. On one of his land petitions it states "Military 83rd Regiment". He finally settled on Miramichi River,NB and his final Land Grant of 1804 (requested additonal acreage) shows they had 6 children and his wife's 2 infirm parents living with them. Land was on S.W.branch of the Miramichi River at the mouth of River Etienne adjoining the Reserve; already built a house and cleared 20 acres. He was the only settler on the S.W. branch for an extent of 16 miles. He had 100 acres, but was requesting an additional 300 acres, extending down the river. Any information on William Babcock, his wife, Margaret Pierson, any of his children or on the parents of his daughter in law, Maria Gorman would be much appreciated. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
