It can be very challenging, but as I have been on both sides of the debate, so to speak, I am exceedingly careful to check, re-check and then check again so that someone else doesn't run into this type of thing. It can take some time to become familiar with the enumerator's handwriting. I made a mistake with a family name that I was familiar with (one of my interests, actually). One of my families in Kent Co. was Windle. It was transcibed as Murdle. When you look at the original you can see how that mistake could be made. Of course, sometimes the enumerator didn't have a very good grasp of spelling. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The records were kept, you just have to figure out where to look for them. Church records were often more complete than government records. I'm not sure what you already know but following each of the children might help. Leave your email and I'll try to help with where to look. The family did have a daughter Mary Ann, but she was born in 1879 and the one on this record was born in 1876. While that isn't conclusive evidence, the fact that this records cites a husband by the name of John Greer, not Thomas and the field notes suggest the replacement Green. I did find Isabella's family on this census, however. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You can find them in Chatham D4 pg 8. In 1891, they had James age 18, Henrey age 16, Bella age 13, Mary A age 11, Matilda age 10 and Susan 6. These children don't seem to be with them in 1901.
