I also have a number of family photographs taken by J Y Mersereau. I don't know if there is any conneciton between the line of Mersereaus I have started to research and the Miramichi ones (?) Author: landsendnb Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.newbrunswick.northumberland/1263/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm wondering if anybody with a Mercereau/Mersereau family tree database has any information on the parents are of Gain B Mersereau. He lived in Sunbury Co, not Northumberland Co, but I've posted here since there was a recent discussion of this surname. Here is what I know about Gain B. Mersereau: born around 1793-1795 in NB; died in 1884 in Burton NB. Based on the age listed for Gain in the 1851 and 1881 census, and the death record found in the Dan Johnson database, I think his year of birth is definitely around 1794. In the 1851 census, Gain Mersereau was living in the Burton NB area with his wife Amelia. He was 56 and she was 36. There were four children living with them (one of them was also called Gain, who was born about 1847). In the 1881 census, Gain B Mersereau was living with Amelia, and John and Mardison, who I believe were his sons. He was still in Burton NB (Sunbury Co). He was 88. In this record, there was a "W" under marital status which I assumed meant he was widowed. However, Amelia (age 65)was living there as well and Amelia was definitely listed as his wife in the 1851 census. I also found his name in the 1871 Canadian Genealogy Index (New Brunswick Directory for 1871): Gain B Mersereau living in French Lake Sunbury NB in 1871 and working as a farmer. Death record (died 08 Feb 1884) states: d. French Lake, Burton (Sunbury Co.) 8th inst., Gain B. MERSEREAU, 91st year. Deceased was the last member of the Lodge of Free Masons held in Sunbury Co. nearly 70 years. I have access to Ancestry.com and I have sifted through lots of Mersereau family tree information, but can't seem to find this Gain B Mersereau. I have found records for a Gain Bartlett Mersereau but his information doesn't match up with the above information. There is also lots of information on Gain Taylor Mersereau but I don't believe this is Gain B's son that was born around 1847. My gut feeling was that Gain B Mersereau might be a grandson of John Mersereau who was born 1735 but I still can't find his name listed under any of the sons of John. One of John's sons, also named John, married Elizabeth Breath, so possibly the "B" in Gain B's name might refer to Breath. Another of John's sons, Andrew, married Elizabeth Bartlett, so perhaps the "B" refers to Bartlett. However, I have seen the children listed for these two men and neither of them had a son called Gain. I've rambled on enough ... I would appreciate it if anyone has any information or suggestions for me. Thanks in advance. Carole Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
