Author: donald_edge Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.newbrunswick.northumberland/1272.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Fox Island is a small island off the mouth of the Black River. Its original name was Ile au Pendu (Hangman's Island) and it is located in Day du Vin, originally Baie des Ovines (Sheep's Bay). The Fox Island Settlement was originally in Glenelg Parish. I know nothing about a lighthouse. Ganong has more about the Settlements and islands. I hope this helps. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I know the answer on this already, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway. If my people came to Miramchi via Saint John in the early 1820's (best guess), would there be any record? They left for Melrose/Port Elgin in 1825 because of the Great Fire and that's where I pick them up first. I'm trying to trace back from Melrose through Miramichi because the trail in Saint John is dead. Thanks everyone Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Anyone here able to provide some information as to what townships or communities comprised this area in the very early 1800's? My Beatties came to Kouchibouguac in 1829. It was a named place then as it was earlier at least according to land transactions I've looked a between Beatties and others. There exists a Catholic church there and two Presbyterian churches. I suspect the records are either in Fredericton and/or one gets permission from the church to read the records in Fredericton unless things have changed. And, I'm told that things change in Fredericton's archives quit frequently. Don Beattie in Winthrop, ME Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: thomasamurray1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.newbrunswick.northumberland/1266.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I see what you mean. I would suspect Maine as a possible location. One of the major industries of the Miramichi area was (and is) logging and lumber. With the fire of 1825, the loss of some markets and the loss of available, high-quality timber; many men found it difficult to work as farmers and fishers in the summer and loggers or millwrights in the winter. They sought work elsewhere. Some in northern New Brunswick and Maine; but soon some were going to the forests of Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Ontario; and soon after to British Columbia and Washington State. About 1830-1850 I would suspect Maine; 1850-1880 the middle areas; and 1880-1910 the west coast. Other reasons for moving might be the gold rush of 1849-50 in California and that of the Yukon about 1898. Thomas Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
