The 1847 James and the 1852 Mary.k James died in Ottawa (1922) Mary died in 1927 Percy B. Was my Grandfather. Percy married Katherine McMahon around 1908. She was in the "family-way" with son Charles. Percy and "Kate" moved to Ottawa around 1910. Percy died in 1929. Son Charlie stayed with grandparents and later emigrated to Boston with his McMahon uncles and aunts. Their second-born (1912)was Bertram McCallum (Bert), Frank (1914) The Clair you refer to was in fact a BOY. He too moved to Ottawa, I remember him as a small child. He died around 1955 having lived with his widowed sister Clara for several years. Clara died Sept 27 1962. the same day as Kate!! Clara enjoyed a drop of rye...and was always happy to be able to share a drink with my father. She was a very jolly woman. My mother, Evelyn (1916) Kate's daughter, is still alive, and remembers her grandmother's maiden name as Griffith. Spelling errors are a problem with the census. I ha! ve the McMahon's listed as McMahen in the '01 CDN census. I was born Oct 17 1949. Glad I didn't get tagged with "Percy". Thanks, I shall check the references you gave me. Its been tough getting info earlier than 1850 on this side of the family. On the McMahon side, I found a Rose Haymond, born in 1820-something as a grandmother. Edward McMahon was married to a Mary Hay. An aunt once traced the Hay clan back to Errol, Scotland. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: thomasamurray1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.newbrunswick.northumberland/1273.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In the 1901 census of Chatham, Northumberland Co., NB is James McCallum b. 16DEC1847, with a wife, Mary, b. 31OCT1852. Children were: Clara G. (11NOV1877), 'Farnk' G. (9OCT1882), Percy B. (18OCT1886) and 'Clilas' F. (son, 26FEB1889.) The 'son', 'Clilas' F. is more likely Claire Flewelling McCallum b. Chatham 26FEB1889; daughter of James and Mary Ann (Griffeth) McCallum of Chatham. While I am descended from some McCallum's (not necessarily these) on my father's side; I am also descended from the Flewelling's on my mother's side. I can state, with some authority, that Clair is unlikely to have received her middle-name from an ancestor. More likely, her baptism was probably conducted by one of my Flewelling cousins; several of who were clergymen. In particular, probably one of them who was an Anglican priest. A separate birth-record for Clair gives her mother as Mary Ann Griffit. I suspect that Griffith or Griffiths may be the most acceptable spelling. A James McCallum d. Northumberland Co., NB 29MAR1936; but it is by no means certain that this was the same James. A possible son of James and Mary was 'Herbertram' McCallum, d. Chatham, 9DEC1895, age 1 year and 9 months, s/o James and Mary McCallum. The suggestion is that the son was b. ca. MAR1894, and a son was b. to James McCallum 11MAR1894. Another child appears to have been Mary Gladys McCallum who d. Chatham 13OCT1892, d/o James and Mary McCallum. In 1881, in Chatham, James McCullam was age 37 and a pilot. The family was Presbyterian, Scottish and all b. NB, except his wife, Mary Ann (age 28) who was English, although also b. NB. Children were: Andrew J. (10), Hannah (9), Edward G. (7), Earnest (4) and Clara E. (3); where Clara appears to be the Clara G. (b. 1877) in 1901. James may be descended from Henry, Thomas and William McCallum, all granted 452 acres each in Newcastle Parish, Northumberland Co., NB 28JUN1788. These may be brothers and they may be connected to the Tabusintac McCallum's, but I am unsure. See: http://www3.sympatico.ca/keith.mccallum/D1.htm for more on these three. Number 158 at: http://www3.sympatico.ca/keith.mccallum/D1.htm#c2774 has Mary Ann Griffith as James' 2nd wife, and Mary Ann Tait as his first. Following the links has James b. 16DEC1843 (more in line with the 1881 census, and the 1901 census is often in error); and makes him the s/o Andrew and Grace (Brown) McCallum; with Andrew the s/o of Thomas, above. I (and the Tabusintac family) appear to be descended from Thomas, Henry and William's brother, John McCallum. Thomas Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My grandfather James TREVORS (Richard, John) 1850-1925 immigrated to Boston in 1873 then settled in Lowell, MA. The NB Archives database of first families gives John TRAVERS c1771-1854 with 4 sons and 2 daughters that matches my John Trevors. I visited Chatham and correspond with cousins but I would like to find some immigration information that would tell me where John and family came from. The census says only Ireland. Family stories say County Cavan in Ireland, I am also looking for the family of James's mother Eleanor (Ellen) ROBINSON. She arrived in 1822 as well. Fletcher", but I believe he died in 1888 and left 6 kids and his wife who died in 1889 (all in Northumberland). He was born in 1851 ish. My connection is with one of their children Michael who was born in 1881 and was only 7 when his mom died. He was raised by a priest who took him in and then neighbors adopted him all in and around Nelson. I wonder if Michael and your grandmother were brother and sister and Charles' wife was Mary McMahon (the dates I have for her is 1849 to 1889). Thank you. The 1851 Glenelg Census identifies John McEwan in House #15 as a "light.keeper/Escuminac" Fox Island is a long barrier island off French River Point at the mouth of the Miramichi--for many years it was the site of a mackerel fishery, and it would be a liekly place for a lighthouse. As for names, there were Ransberrys in Houses 189 and 246, but no mention of lighthouse--they were farmers & lumberers. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I found this information about Robert Rainsborough (Reinsborough) from Parliamentary Sessional Papers from 1873 regarding lighthouses in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. It says "Two beacon lights were recently erected on Fox Island, at the entrance to the Miramichi River. The amount paid on account of their construction up to the 30th June last was $530.14. They were lit for the first time on the 19th May last, and Mr. Robert Rainsborough was appointed keeper on the 12th October last, at a salary of $200 per annum." The Reinsborough family did come from Glenelg. I have found Robert in the 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, and 1901 census. It says that he was a farmer. Is there a genealogical society or a library that could help me? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
