    1. [Northumberland Co NB] Families in NELSON Parish prior to 1851 (Wallace, Kain, O'Brien, Dillon, and others)
    2. B&DStack
    3. I'm trying to piece together a puzzle that involves several families that were in Nelson prior to 1851 and how they connect to my O'BRIEN/DILLON line. I'd be interested in learning more about the surnames WALLACE, KAIN, HACKETT, MAHONEY and SULLIVAN. What I know, Michael WALLACE first received the land that James DILLON settled on in 1832. James DILLON and his wife Catherine were parents of Catherine DILLON who married Patrick O'BRIEN. James DILLON died 1842 leaving his estate to daughters Catherine and Mary. The surname had pretty much vanished by 1851. The godparents for the DILLON/O'BRIEN children were John WALLACE/Mary DILLON (1836) (Is this the daughter?) Con SULLIVAN/Margaret O'BRIEN (1838) MICHAEL EGAN/MARGARET DILLON (1840) (who was Margaret DILLON) John HACKETT/Ellen O'BRIEN (1850) PAT MAHONEY/Mary SULLIVAN (1854) Michael KAIN/Mrs. John KAIN (1857) Daniel SULLIVAN/ELIZA MAHONEY (1862) Other DILLON References: 1832 The property documents were "att: Thomas DILLON" 1831 Catherine DILLON m Murt MARE 1832 Catherine DILLON age 22 buried Nelson 1843 Mary DILLON m Thomas COLLINS sponsors for Robert KAIN 1843 DILLON/COLLINS witness marriage of Betsy CARROLL to Michael KAIN I did not find COLLINS on the 1851 census There is also no known connection between the various O'Brien families in the area at the time but the Godparents above are making me wonder if there might have been (maybe before they arrived) as the families seem to be located far enough apart to discount the neighbour theory. I'm willing to share anything that I have that might help someone else and would welcome hearing from anyone with information on any of the people mentioned above in an effort to figure out the connections.

On Sunday morn. a young man named WISEMAN was found a short distance above Salisbury Corner (West. Co.) in a state of insensibility, his appearance having every suspicion of foul play. It appears that WISEMAN had been down here on Saturday for the purpose of getting a load of goods for some parties near Salisbury. He had called at various places on the way up and was observed to have a considerable sum of money in his possession. The last house he left was between 10 and 11 o'clock Saturday night and from that time till next morn. about daylight his fate is at present in mystery. Author: lhmills Surnames: Johnston, McLelland, Spencer Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.newbrunswick.northumberland/1261.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My GGfather, James McLelland Jr.(b.1823, d. 1887) married Jane Johnston,(b. 1833) on 29 March, 1852 in Buctouche NB. I only recently discovered Jane's death certificate in the Massachusetts Vital Records at the NEGHS site. She died in Boston Mass. on July 10, 1907. The death record lists her parent's names as Andrew Johnston and Ann Spencer of Cocaigne (Cocagne)NB Canada. The 1871 Census of Kent County New Brunswick lists an Andrew and Ann Johnston as residing in Dundas Parish (which includes Cocagne) Andrew is listed as being born in Scotland, and Ann in Ireland. Both birthdates are 1803 and both are 68 in 1871. Your marriage date of December 5th 1827 and the location, Cocagne, both fit so I suspect we are looking for information on the same people. That is all the information I have on these two individuals and I have very little more on Jane who was my great grandmother. Anything you might be able to add would be appreciated.
