I have found most of what you have posted. The new information you mention is the 1900 census where Alfred is a servant in the Octave Paradis. I don't think I had this. Only one thing I can add to what you have here is that 'Nancy' is Anastasie Doucette and she and Marcel had a son. The original post about adoption was a story told to me by a Great Uncle, which turned out to be inaccurate. I now know that Alfred was not adopted by the Grivois family, but there is new evidence that Fred's children were placed in an orphanage in New Brunswick or with other families when their mother died while they were very young. Author: formark Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.newbrunswick.madawaska/191.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Marcel Grivois, father of George Alfred Grivois, first married a lady by the name of Nancy with whom he was living in 1870. In 1880 he was a widower living with his 72-year old aunt Elizabeth Grivois (Guédry) and an 18-year old servant named Demeuse Levasseur. Evidently, Marcel Grivois and Ms. Lavasseur married shortly after the 1880 census and had Alfred. In 1900 Alfred was a servant in Madawaska for the family of Octave Paradis. Marcel's father was Joseph Gatien Guédry (husband of Thècle Martin). Joseph Gatien Guédry was the son of Romain Guédry and Marie Comeau, who migrated to the Grand Isle Plantation area several years before 1836 from Meteghan, Nova Scotia. They left Meteghan about 1820 with their family of four sons (Hilaire, Jean-Anselme, Joseph Gatien and Calais) and two daughters (Marie and Marie-Elizabeth) and went first to Carleton, Quebec (just across the Restigouche River from Campbellton, New Brunswick). Hilaire Guédry married Cécile Bourg in Carleton and founded a large family with descendants in eastern New Brunswick today. The rest of the family left Carleton about 1830 and went to Grand Isle Plantation in today's Maine. Romain Guédry's parents were Augustin Guédry dit Grivois and Marie-Françoise Jeanson. His grandparents were Pierre Guédry dit Labine and Marguerite Brasseau. His great-grandparents were Claude Guédry and Marguerite Petitpas. Initially Romain's family was called Guédry when in Carleton and Grand Isle Plantation (although the spelling was butchered by the English census takers). About 1860-1870 they began to use the name Grivois - probably after the dit name of Romain's father Augustin Guédry dit Grivois. Anyway that's a brief history of the Marcel Grivois family of northeastern Maine. Martin Guidry Baton Rouge, Louisiana Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: DonnaGeePugh Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.newbrunswick.madawaska/217.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Wow! Thank you so much, thomasmurray1. This is extremely helpful information that I'll be processing this morning. Eva Madore was maternal grandmother to my ex-husband (with whom I'm still on good terms). We knew that she'd married ? Grondin (thank you for their marriage info). M. Grondin ended up in an insane asylum and while he was there, Eva began a relationship with Louis St Onge with whom she had at least 12 children. Louis had already had 11 children with his first wife Annie Desrosiers (who is also called 'Fortunat' by family). Perhaps you are correct that this is a nick name. The Violet (aka Violette) family in Canada goes back to Charles Francois Violette who was born in 1716 in France. He settled in Louisbourg, Nova Scotia at an unfortunate time and ended up being deported back to France after the Siege of Louisbourg in 1758 (it is believed that three of his children with his 2nd wife were killed during the battle). Charles' eldest son Francois either left with him & returned to Canada at some point or managed to escape and hide out ... in 1770 he married Marie-Luce Thibodeau in Ecoupag, New Brunswick. Author: thomasamurray1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.newbrunswick.madawaska/217.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: According to his death registration, Ferdinand Madore was b. Baker (Boker?) Brook, Madawaska Co., NB 31AUG1873, and died there 18JUL1953 age 79 years, 10 months and 18 days. His wife was Emelie Violette, his parents were Octave and Celeste (Quimonde?) Madore and the informant was his son, 'Frederic' Madore. Octave was also from Baker Brook and Celeste was from Ste.-Luce, USA. Ferdinand Madore (17) was in St.-Hilaire Parish, Madawaska Co., NB in the 1891 census. There were, nearby, several members of a Baker family, including 'Enock' S. Baker (ca. 1819) from the US. Presumably this was Baker Brook. His father was Octave Madore (62) b. Canada (i.e., Quebec?), and his mother was Celeste Guimond (59) b. NB. Siblings were Hilaire (20) and Salomé (24). Octave (52) and Céleste (59; probably should be 49) 'Mador' had a much larger family in St.-Hilaire Parish in 1881. He was b. 'Q' (Quebec) and she and the children were b. NB. Children were: Octave (24), Anastasia (22), Aleime (?) (son, 20), 'Isäc' (18), Joseph (15), Salomé (14), Hilaire (11) and Ferdinand (8). In 1871, in St. Francis (St.-François) Parish, in what was then Victoria Co., NB, the surname has been transcribed as 'Malor'. Octave (39) and 'Sellis' (39) had children: 'Fline' (?) (daughter, 20), Octave (13), 'Anertanre' (?, Anastasie?) (daughter, 12), Outrin (Outrim?) (son, 10), Eugie (son, 9), Joseph (8), 'Salamis' (4) and 'Helare' (1). In St.-François Parish in 1851 Octave 'Maddore' (36) is indicated as having arrived in NB in 1838. He and Celeste (23) had a daughter, Flavia (2). I think Octave is the Octave Madore who d. St. Hilaire 22JUL1901 age 72 years. In Ste.-Hilaire Parish in 1901, Octave was b. 15APR1829, Celeste was b. 16NOV1830 and Ferdinand was b. 1OCT1874; but the dates in that census are not reliable. In her registration 'Emilia (Violet) Madore' was b. Eagle Lake, ME 13FEB1888, d. 'Baker-Brook' 26MAR1950 age 62 years, 1 month and 12 days, and was a daughter of Simon and Edith (Langlois) 'Violet'. Her husband was 'Fortunat' Madore. this based on information from her son, Frédéric Madore. Frédéric also gave his parents as Fortunat and Emélia (Violette) Madore when he married Edmunston 3SEP1947 Colette Nadeau. Interestingly, Marie Eva Madore (b. Baker Brook ca. 1909) when she m. 'St. Hilaire', Madawaska Co., NB 4OCT1927 Joseph-Thaddeé Grondin, also gave her parents as Fortunat and Emilia (Violette) Madore. Although, as in the census returns above, he is consistently a variation of Ferdinand, perhaps Fortunat was a nick-name? Simon and Edith ('Langlais') Violette did exist. A daughter (unnamed) married Fort Kent, Aroostook Co., ME 1901 _____ 'Dechene', s/o Joseph and Sophie (Boutot (Bulotte?)) Dechene. Simon may have been the same b. ca. 1853 in Aroostook Co., in 1860. There was also a Simon b. ca. 1834. The 1853 Simon seems to be the right one, and he is also given a Simon Luc Violette b. ca. 1853, d. Fort Kent 8JAN1925, s/o Luc and Anthemise (Pelletier) Violette; and to have m. Edith Langlais (b. Eagle Lake ca. 1852), d/o Francois and Anthemise (Gagnon) Langlais. Another daughter was Dorimine Violette b. ca. 1870, m. Andre Deschenes (b. ca. 1869). Another daughter was Edith Violette (27DEC1886-1APR1928), m. Denis Cyr. There was no mention of Emélie. Dorimine is really questionable as Simon-Luc Violette and edith Langlois were m. St. Louis (church?), Fort Kent, Aroostook Co., ME 15APR1883. Ferdinand (OCT1873) and Emélie (MAR1886) Madore are in St.-Hilaire Parish, Madawaska Co., NB in 1911. A daughter was Eva (JUL1910). Ferdinand's mother was Céleste Madore (NOV1837). They were married about 1800, St Basile, New Brunswick.(?) I know that Francoise father is Jean Baptiste Thibodeau, because he was called grand pere on one of their children's baptism record, but I'm not sure which Jean this is.
