His occupation was F'man & Lab. 1851 parish of Campobello, page 9: Mathews, Stephen 44 husband Frances 31 wife Nelson 13 son Eliza Jane 11 daughter Christy 6 daughter Richard 75 father to Stephen All were born in NB. Stephen's occupation was fisherman. There were two other Mathews families on page 9: Mathews, John 47 husband Rebecca 32 wife Irene 11 daughter Mary 9 daughter Elizabeth 7 daughter Andrew 5 son Sarahette 2 daughter Mathews, Thomas 26 husband Frances 28 wife Cecilia 2 daughter John 22 brother to T. M. Mary Ann 30 mother Emily Jane 10 daughter to Mary Ann William 6 son to Mary Ann Abram 3 son to Mary Ann All in both households were born in N.B., and the 47 year old John and Thomas were fishermen. I don't see a connection between the Campobello Mathews families and this one in St. George though: 1851 parish of St. George page 35: Matthews, Enoch 48 husband Sarah 43 wife Luther 22 son Francis 20 son Edward 18 son Enoch 16 son Gilbert 14 son Sarah 12 daughter William 4 son Eliza Ann 2 daughter All were born in N.B., and Enoch was a fisherman. In the 1851 census for Campobello, there are two Jerushas who were more or less the right age to be the one who married Nelson: 1851 parish of Campobello page 5: McLennan, William 42 husband Sarah 39 wife Emeline 18 daughter Priscilla 16 daughter Jerusha 12 daughter Idelia 10 daughter Amelia 9 daughter William 7 son Elmira 4 daughter Thomas 2 son All were born in N.B. and William was a fisherman. 1851 parish of Campobello page 8: Finny, Nathanal 38 husband Dorothea 35 wife Stephen 16 son Jerusha 14 daughter Cornelia 5 daughter Henry 3 son Theodore 3 mos. son Hannah Elliot 27 niece All were born in N.B., and Nathanal was a fisherman.
