    3. Donna - Manitoba Genealogical Society, Inc., Unit E, 1045 St. James St.,Winnipeg, MB, (204) 783-9139, e-mail; [email protected] Other sources I have found: (1)- for Ontario and Manitoba Census records on micro-film at the Elizabeth Dafoe Library, the University of Manitoba. (2)- Winnipeg Centennial Library for Winnipeg City Directories - some on microfilm from 1800's to 2000 (stopped publishing). These early directories also contain some rural centres as well. (3)- This library also has on microfilm very early editions of The Manitoba Free Press which became the Winnipeg Free Press (for obits) Hope this helps Dick.. ---- Original Message ----- From: "Donna Alden-Bugden" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 24, 2002 12:15 PM Subject: [MBWINNIPEG-L] Winnipeg Family History Centre? > Hello, > > I'm moving to Winnipeg soon and I would like to know where I can do Family > History Research. 3. Can you give me some advice please ? My great uncle James O'Hara, left Ireland some time before ww1, and served with the Canadian army I have his war record, but after that I am stuck. I have a photo of him taken in Winnipeg 1950's. I know his wife was Ella Goff, and he had at least one daughter called Colleen, looks about 13 in 1929. Any Ideas ? many thanks Wendy Australia. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard McElhoes" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, November 25, 2002 4:56 AM Subject: Re: [MBWINNIPEG-L] Winnipeg Family History Centre? > Donna - > Manitoba Genealogical Society, Inc., Unit E, 1045 St. James St.,Winnipeg, > MB, (204) 783-9139, e-mail; [email protected] > Other sources I have found: (1)- for Ontario and Manitoba Census records on > micro-film at the Elizabeth Dafoe Library, the University of Manitoba. 3. Wendy - Does the Army record show his regiment, date & place of enlistment, residence address, next-of-kin, date & place of discharge? If the addresses are in Winnipeg, he could, perhaps, be listed in the City Directories of the period if the dates were known. If he was alive and living and/or working in Winnipeg in 1950's, it shouldn't be too hard to locate him (might even have spouse's name and his occupation) According to my arithmetic, his daughter was born about 1916. Was she born in Ireland or Canada. If in Canada, where? 3. Hello Dick, Many thanks for your email. Yes his army record says he enlisted in the fort Gary Horse on the 24th August 1914, his home address is only given as Calgary, his wives name is only given as Mrs. E. O'hara, it does not actually say where he was demobed only that it was the 14/August 1919. He was award the M.C. I don't have the full record yet only what a kind lady at the archive sent me. My uncle visited him in 1959, and the family are pretty sure it was in Winnipeg, cupped with the fact the photo I have of him is stamped with a Winnipeg photographer, which is no longer their. Re: (If he was alive and living and/or working in Winnipeg in 1950's, it > shouldn't be too hard to locate him (might even have spouse's name and his > occupation) It would be great if you can find any lead at all I have come up with blanks every where I have tried. Re:( According to my arithmetic, his daughter was born about 1916. Was she born in Ireland or Canada. If in Canada, where?) I have checked the Irish records and can't find a marriage for James and Ella. I checked the English ones too as Ella was supposed to have come from London with no luck, so I think Colleen would have been born in either Calary or Winnipeg. James was born in 1887. The last I have of him is that he was a labour on a farm in 1901 census in Ireland. This has been a real brick wall for me, so I would be very grateful for any help you could give me. Many thanks Wendy. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard McElhoes" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, December 01, 2002 6:01 AM Subject: Re: [MBWINNIPEG-L] Hello Richard. > Wendy - > Does the Army record show his regiment, date & place of enlistment, > residence address, next-of-kin, date & place of discharge? > If the addresses are in Winnipeg, he could, perhaps, be listed in the City > Directories of the period if the dates were known. > If he was alive and living and/or working in Winnipeg in 1950's, it > shouldn't be too hard to locate him (might even have spouse's name and his > occupation) > According to my arithmetic, his daughter was born about 1916. 3. Greetings all: Here's hoping that someone can locate information about the death (and life, for that matter) of John STAIT, died Sept 4, 1896. He died at Pilot Mound, MB in what is believe by the family to be a farming accident. Is there a genealogical society for that section of MB? Could anyone direct me to a local paper that might record obits? Thanks, and have a great holiday season. Hugh Stott Chicago, IL
