"Peacefully, on May 4, 1977 at Grace Hospital, Walter of 33 Southlake Drive, passed away in his 80th. year. Mr. Werry was born November 13. 1887 in Crystal City, Man.. He was married to Helen Mary McNair on July 12, 1926. His beloved wife, Helen predeceased Walter in June, 1975. With the number 187747 Walter enlisted in the 90th. Battallon Winnipeg Rifles on November 17, 1915, and saw service in France with the 8th. Battallon C.E.F. "The Little Black Devils" from August 28, 1916, as a Bugler and a Runner, until the end of that war. He served extensively with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles (Reserves) in the 1930's during the 1939 - 1945 war years and until retirement in 1953. He became the Bugle Major of the Battallon and later, the Regimental Quarter - Master Sargent. He was employed with Canadian Johns - Manville for thirty - five years and was a Quarter Century Member. He took the first step in Masonry on September 24, 1962, as a member of Ancient Landmark Lodge Nor. 3 A. F. and A. M.. In 1976 Walter decided to travel through membership in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, attajning his 18th. degree. Unfortunately, because of his illness, he could go no futher. He is survived by his two sons, Major Ron and a daughter - in - law Eve of Winnipeg, and Gerald and daughter - in - law Marge of Regina. Also grandchildren Paul, Kym, Tim, Jim, David and Debbie, and brothers and sisters, Everett, Nettle, Hela, Osborne, Willard, George and Wilber. Funeral service will be held in Thomson Funeral Chapels, Broadway at Furby, Monday, May 9 at 2:15 p.m., the Rev. Grodon Shields officiating, with interment in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. A Masonic service will be held at the chapels at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 8. Honorary bearers will be brothers Everett, Osborne and Willard and Messrs. Percy Brooks, Jim Mitchell and John Upritchard. Active pallbearers will be Messrs. Paul Werry, David Werry, Edward Wiebe, Alec Moody, John Paisley and Ken Redshaw.
