Hi Mary! I cannot offer you much help, but the BRACKEN family is also an elusive part of my family. The family seemed to move around ALOT! I believe that the family is originally from Ireland, probably the North. My Great Grandmother was Elsie Sophronia BRACKEN, b. 1879 in St. Vincent Twp., Grey County, Ontario, one of 10 children of Christie Bracken and Mary Jane Clark, married Richard "Chum" BOWES. The Bracken family has been very difficult to keep track of - they seem to move back and forth to the US, "Out West" to Manitoba and Saskatchewan, some staying, some coming back, etc., etc.!! I have not been able to sort them out I'm afraid!! Also, there is a Manitoba Bracken in my husband's tree, but I don't know any specifics on him yet. From a family bible, I have the information that: George E. BRACKEN married Ellen Edith HILTON, 2 Mar 1904 in ? The Hiltons lived in Winnipeg, Headingly, St. Francis Xavier, and area and Ellen Edith died in 1926 in Neepawa, Manitoba. That's it! Hope it's of some help! Perhaps we can eventually help each other? I'm an extreme novice at research in Canada -- are there census reports for Canada for the late 1800s, as in the U.S.? > > BRACKEN name has been very elusive for me. Any assistance would be greatly helpful. Has anyone with Winnipeg connections heard of this name? Is it German?
