Note: There is a photo with this article. "COLONEL JACK ALLAN, now residing in Vancouver, B. C. Col. John Beresford Allan is one of the best known of the early day military officers of this city. From the earliest days of the city's history he has been active in Military work. His first experience under fire was with the northern forces in the American Civil War. Later he was in the Fenjan Raid in Canada and did distinguished service. He recieved a commission at the time. In 1874 he joined the Northwest Mounted Police and was at Fort Walsh, Montana, when Sitting Bull and his band surrendered, crossed the line and became residents of Canada after the Custer massacre. Colonel Allan he was a captain then, was in the thick of the fighting in the 85 Reil rebellion and he also served in the Boer war, paying his own passage across to England to join the imperial forces, serving under Colonel Herchmer. He offered his services in the Great War but could not be placed. He is a native of Armagh, Ireland. Colonel Allan is one of the first members of Prince Rupert loged, A. F. & M. A.. For a time he was president of the Winnipeg Old Timers association. He took up his residence in Winnipeg when 41 years of age and removed to the coast three years ago. He came to Red River with the first Wolsely expedition in 1879 and later took up his residence in St. Andrew's, near the old stone church, where he dispensed true western hospitality.When with the mounted police he had charge of the campaign against "Almighty Voice" a notorious Indian bandit. At the time Capt. Allan was seriously wounded. He was a member of the Manitoba legislature in 1883 as a supporter of Hon. John Norquay." For information only.
