Hello, Jacki: I have just joined the Winnipeg list and caught your message re BDM's in the Free Press. I am helping my husband research his great grandmother's family (originated in Doncaster, Yks & London, Eng.), and we have reached a standstill due to the fact that she often went by different last names. Her name at birth was Annie Steels or Johnson and she was born in abt 1897 in Dover, Kent, England. She met my husband's grt grandfather, Robert Stanley MacDonald (or McDonald) while he was stationed overseas. They married in Elham, Kent and then came to Canada after he was discharged (first they went to his hometown of Springhill, Nova Scotia, then moved west to Winnipeg). Annie & Robert divorced in the 1950's or 60's (dates unknown), and she apparently died in about 1973/74 in Winnipeg. None of the family members can find a copy of the obituary, so I was wondering if you would have time during one of your "sessions" to have a look for this obituary in the Free Press. I have pretty-well exhausted all avenues of research in England for Annie's family (which is proving to be quite elusive at the best of times). Annie & Robert had 4 children (3 are still living). Their son, Robert, Jr. passed away several years ago. In reciprocation for your assistance, I would like to offer my help with Winnipeg research, as I have in my possession some old (1950's/1960's) City Directory books for Winnipeg which provide the person's name, their occupation, their address and whether they owned or rented the house. They also provide the wife's name and as it is done alphabetically, it is easy to find others that were living at the same address (provided they are at least 18 years old). When it comes to names like "Smith" & "Jones", for example, it becomes a lot more difficult to group people together, however, with a little time, it can be done. My grandparents lived in Winnipeg for many, many years (Harrison & Anderson) so I have collected some Winnipeg resources for my research. Regards, Betty Stewart British Columbia
