Hi Karen - Ah yes - the good ol' Empire - tipped a couple of glasses there, on occasion. Thanks for the info on the Wards. I guess the maps they show on the Census site are outdated. They show Wards 3 & 4 as comprising most of present day downtown Winnipeg, with Ward 4 being north of Portage Ave. I'll give Ward 2 a try. Thanks, again, Karen. Hello Dick, I'd say it is in Ward 2. That address in 1947 was the Empire Hotel. Ward 2 is just east of Ward 3 and it runs from Notre Dame Avenue on the north to the Red River on the east and along the Assiniboine River on the south and goes north up Colony Street-Balmoral St. Karen >From: "Richard McElhoes" <rmcelhoes@hotmail.com> >Reply-To: CAN-MB-WINNIPEG-L@rootsweb.com >To: CAN-MB-WINNIPEG-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [MBWINNIPEG-L] 1901 Census >Date: Thu, 7 Aug 2003 11:49:06 -0500 > >Could SKS tell me in which Ward of the City of Winnipeg would the east side >of Main St. between Broadway and York be for this Census? >According to the map, it should be Ward 3 >According to the 1901 Winnipeg Henderson's Directory, my gr.aunt, Margaret >S. Diane, I believe you are mistaken (hope I'm not) that it is the 1906 that Automated Genealogy is transcribing. It is to my understanding, only the 1901...... There are several people from Manitoba working on this as well. It is a bit slow right now because of holidays etc but hopefully it will pick up again come winter.

Hello April, As I said the Alberta Family History Society has been doing the 1906 census and if you check it out at their website you can see how much has been done for the three provinces. It is not just members of AFHS that have been working on this project as there are submissions from people in Saskatchewan and Manitoba as well. The Alberta Family History Society has been working on the 1906 census since it came on line in the Spring and at present over 50 % of Alberta and lesser amounts in Saskatchewan and Manitoba have been done and are online and searchable by going to the AFHS site. Anyone can check out the Progress at www.afhs.ab.ca

You have to sign up as a volunter to be able to correct any info you transcribe or to claim a page to transcribe and get credit for.
Lots of people are doing the transcribing online...but as far as I know it's just 1901...not 1906! Hello, I was wondering if there is anyone on the list who could possibly do two look-ups for me? There is a Tryphena Benson who died in 1929, Winnikpeg and I'm trying to find out if she was originally from Newfoundland and I'm hoping that her death records may have that information. The Reg. # is 1929-044194, her birth date is ll/l1/1857 and she was 71 when she died. One of Tryphena's daughters was named Annie and there is a marriage listing for an Annie Benson who m. a Dave Peter Dalik l2/05/1922, the Reg. # is 1922-045090 and I'm hoping that the marriage record will indicate if this Annie is Tryphena's daughter. Also, would anyone happen to know of a 'link' where there may be information about other Newfoundlanders who moved to Manitoba. I appreciate any help in searching for the above people. Sincerely, Bess, Williams Lake, B.C. _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. I know that Joseph and Sarah came to the US form Ontario, Canada. Please help!! I also have realatives with the surnames of Dewar and Davies.
Hello Bess, Unless someone can find an obituary and a marriage write up there is no way to check the information on the registrations. You have to order the registration from the Department of Vital Stats. These are 12.00 each. Unfortunately Manitoba is not like BC where someone can look up the actual registration for you.
