Hi Don You may want to look at Ontario - OVR B-D-M Index which is at Vancouver Public Library, 6th Floor. If you go to the Ontario Archives site there will be an overview of what records they have...You can then order records thru your closest Library that has a m/f reader. I have seen this name TAIT many times while browsing thru BDM records but I can't remember which County, I am looking thru several and have been over the past year. At present I have death records on MS935 reel 4, 6 & 8. I believe the years to be in 1873 & 74 and encompass several Counties including Grey and Simcoe...These reels are presently at North Vancouver Public Library and they will be here til Oct 2. Also if you are looking for Obits or announcements from MB then SFU has all Freepress since earliest date of publication to present and also all Henderson's on Microfiche (in the Peel collection) from 18?? to 1953...UBC has the Tribune to, I think, 1933.. cheers ~viv~ in Vancouver ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don Hall" <donhall@istar.ca> To: <CAN-MB-WINNIPEG-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, September 19, 2003 4:56 PM Subject: [MBWINNIPEG-L] Surname - TAIT St. Boniface & Rat Portage > I hope that this is the right Manitoba List for my questions. > > I am searching for birth and death entries [or any other > information] for my TAIT ancestors. I hope that this is the right Manitoba List for my questions. I am searching for birth and death entries [or any other information] for my TAIT ancestors. My wife and I travelled across Canada this summer from our home on the west coast researching our families. We stopped at the Provincial Library in Winnipeg without finding out any info from Directories, etc. We also stopped at the Library in Kenora, ONT. Neither library had anything from the time Rat Portage was in Manitoba. I did find two newspaper items regarding older children's deaths in an Orillia, ONT newspaper. What I have: Parents William L. and Jane Gray [nee Donaldson] TAIT [children born in Manitoba, from the 1901 census for Vancouver, B. C.] Percy, b. Jul 6, 1883 Melville, b. Aug 2 1885 Edith Maude b. May 22 1888 Chester Lamont b. Apr 6 1890 I am looking for where in Manitoba they were born, if there is a way of finding out. Deaths: [from the Orillia Times, Nov 23, 1882, where William's brother lived. Nov 11/ 1882 - at St. Boniface, Manitoba death - Albert Gary TAIT of dyptheric croup, age 6 years 23 days. also, death - Nov 16/ 1882 - at St. Boniface, Manitoba Gertrude [s/b Olive] Hilda May TAIT of dyptheric croup age 3 years 10 mons 16 days. Children of Mr. W.L. TAIT, late of Gravenhurst, Ontario. I am looking for where the family was living at the time. Older siblings claimed that they grew up, " living along the Rat Portage; It was the happiest memories of their childhood". I guess the big question for me to ask the list; Was St. Boniface on the Rat Portage or would a family living in Norman [at the first portage] have to travel up the Winnipeg River to St. Boniface to get medical help for their ill children? Thanks for any kind help Regards Don in Richmond, B. C.
