    1. [CAN-MB-WINNIPEG-L] Birth Marriage Obit Lookups
    2. HUMPHREY JACKI
    3. I was pleased to see a Winnipeg list get started as this is where my Canadian roots are from. Like most lists I've joined a checked the archives and discover only 14 messages. As this is a brand new list I decided that I should do my bit to help it get started. Although I now live in New Westminster I have access to the Winnipeg Free Press going back to the late 1800's at the local university (will check exact date next time I'm there and of course it was the Manitoba Free Press back then.) If any one wants something looked up and they don't have access to the old papers (and they know the date within a couple of weeks) I would be happy to look for them. As I am busy with my owe research and have also volunteered to work on the FreeBMD Project (transcribing the English Indexes) and on a census transcription project for Devon I do not get to the university all that often. So it may take a while before I get a chance to do lookups. But I will make a list of all inquiries and make every effort to get up there at least once every six weeks. Please do not feel shy about asking. I would not have offered if I wasn't willing to do it. I'll just make sure I look first before I get involved in the London Times for the 1850's and forget all about the rest of the world. Jacki Humphrey New Westminster, BC

    3. Hi Everybody, I just added a link to the Cemetery Photo Volunteers Web Page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mbwinnip/ Scroll down the page. This is a world wide volunteer effort. I included a link directly to volunteers in Manitoba. There are two volunteers for Winnipeg. Hopefully, more people from Winnipeg District will volunteer. This website is a resource for people who want photos of headstones in places we ourselves cannot get to. A volunteer may charge for film and processing and postage. 3. HI I am familiar with Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Headingly. The church was origionally situated on the north side of the river, almost directly south of the present location of the church. Go south from Portage Avenue to the last left turn before the river, and there is a small graveyard there. The MGS has recorded all the stones in the graveyard. The records of those buried there are available from the Diocesan office, 925 Nesbitt, phone 204-453-6130 Cheers Barrie -----Original Message----- From: K&S McDonald <kmcdonal@jetstream.net> To: CAN-MB-WINNIPEG-L@rootsweb.com <CAN-MB-WINNIPEG-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, July 18, 1999 3:05 PM Subject: [CAN-MB-WINNIPEG-L] Headingly >I have been researching the Siddle family tree. 1. [CAN-MB-WINNIPEG-L] Swiss in Selkirk Colony II
    2. Maralyn A. Wellauer
    3. Let's try again. The attachment did not copy in the first message. For Immediate Release February 1999 SELKIRK PROJECT UNDERWAY I am still actively collecting data pertaining to a select group of early Swiss emigrants who left Europe in 1821 and traveled together to Lord Selkirk’s colony on the Red River of the North in Western Canada. Presently, the location is near present-day Winnipeg, Manitoba. Beginning in 1823, entire families relocated to areas in the Minnesota and Wisconsin territories, Illinois, and Missouri. Others remained in the colony until 1826, when they too left for the United States. I am most interested in evaluating the extant primary source material relating to the migration, to identify the individual members of the group by name, age, occupation, and social status; and to determine the fate of the families. Of particular interest are personal accounts contained in contemporary letters, diaries, and colonial papers. The majority of the first group of Swiss in Wisconsin originated in cantons Bern and Neuchatel. Other cantons are represented as well. Approximately 44 families participated in this emigration, including Abram Perret (a.k.a. Abraham Perry,) and Benjamin Gervais, founders of St. Paul, Minnesota, the renowned artist, Peter Rindisbacher, and father of the famed Civil War General Augustus Louis (A.L.) Chetlain of Galena, Illinois. The project focuses around a core group of 10 Swiss families with the following surnames: Aebersold, Chatelain, Hofmann, Marchand, Monnier, Quinche, Rindisbacher, Scheidegger, Schirmer, and Stramm. The emigrant party also included a number of professional soldiers, of German, Swiss, and French origins, who were formerly attached to the de Meuron and de Watteville regiments. The names of primary interest are: Bain (Bane, Bayne,) Bruechler (Brickler,) Ehrler (Erler,) Fournier, Gerber, Langet, Ostertag (Osterday,) Paquet (Paquette,) Polander (Bollender,) Schmid (Schmidt,) and Verring (Varing). Correspondence relating to this group is welcomed. Please contact: Maralyn A. 1. [CAN-MB-WINNIPEG-L] Earley or Early family search
    2. Peter Willcock
    3. Hello everyone. I am looking for information on the family of George Early. George Early (originally spelled Earley) was a blacksmith who moved from Horton Township, On, to Morris MB in 1887 or possibly 1897, and later moved to Winnipeg. His wife was Sarah Jane Young. They are both buried in Elmwood Cemetary, Winnipeg. George was born in 1855 and died in 1920. He was living at 44 Elgin Ave when he died. He was a brother to Thomas Earley, who also lived in Winnipeg (I have the details of Thomas Earley's family). One of George's sisters, Margaret Earley, was married to Robert Dougall, who was one of my mother's grandfathers. Does anybody know anything about George Early and his family? His obituary does not mention any children. Regards........Marguerite Earley Willcock e Earley Willcock

    3. Hello everyone. I am researching the family of Robert Dougall. He and his wife Margaret Earley moved to Winnipeg in 1879 (from Renfrew or Pembroke, On), and he was killed the following year in an explosion. I believe they had 4 children: Robert Earley Dougall, Andrew Dougall, Thomas Dougall, and Alexander Dougall. Robert Earley Dougall was my mother's father. I am looking for information on John, Thomas, and Alexander, and their families. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thanks.........Marguerite Earley Willcock rley Willcock

    3. The Winnipeg District web site has been updated. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mbwinnip/ I created an About Winnipeg District page and moved this information from the main page to there. There are links to the 5 communities displaying maps. I also added a couple more links to the main page, suggestions from visitors. Remember, if you have a question about ancestors you are researching in the Winnipeg District, you can send this to the List, too. Somebody on the List may be able to help you. 1. Rev. G. O. CORBETT, Headingley
    2. Scott Erickson
    3. I just discovered the Winnipeg list. I am searching for information on my wife's g-g-grandfather, Rev. Dr. Griffith (or Griffiths) Owen CORBETT, who was an Anglican minister in Headingley, Manitoba, Canada, in the mid-1800's. He was born in England about 1830. I recently came across a citation stating that G.O. Corbett's parish in Canada was named "...after his former parish, Headingley, Leeds, Yorkshire." G.O. Corbett married Abigail Butt or Budd, probably about 1850 in England. Corbett returned to England in 1864 but left his wife and children in Manitoba. My mother-in-law descended from their daughter, Mary Elizabeth Corbett, who married Charles Holland. I have been fortunate to have recently found new information on Rev. Corbett, including a scandal he was involved in during the early 1860's. However, I am trying to piece together more facts on this individual so that I can research his roots (and those of his wife Abigail) back in England. I would appreciate any information or advice that anyone might be able to pass along considering these two persons (G.O. Corbett and his wife Abigail Butt/Budd) and/or their families. I am also generally interested in the history of Headingley in its formative years and on the Holland family. Any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated. If further information is needed, please contact me directly at the e-mail address listed below. Scott Erickson Manteca, California, USA imiloa@worldnet.att.net

    2. Ann Van Royen
    3. I believe that Alexander and wife Mirza McDougall, John and wife Margaret McDougall, and Arnold Bertram Richards and his wife Edith came to Winnipeg from Glasgow sometime after 1918 when their father died there. I have some information from a city directory, year unknown, which included a number of Alexander McDougalls, but without the wife's name I had no way of determining which, if any, of the entries applies to my Alexander or John. Can someone tell me in which year the Winnipeg City Directories began including the wife's name in her husband's listing so that I can begin searching these directories when we next get to Winnipeg or Ottawa? And, of course, if some kind soul has access to the directories, I would appreciate a lookup. Thanks, Ann Van Royen
