    3. Hello -- Another interested participant. I am looking for ( see below) but my eye caught the Cumming(s) that Lisa presented. I have a great aunt who married John Cummings in ON -- he died in the 1890's I believe and left aunt Isabelle with five children. Frederick E., Ethel, Isabelle, Olive and Roy. , I have completely lost them. I have pictures of them and some locations. The latest being a name in an obituary. Isabelle, the mother, was in Oregon I believe Ethel married a Nichol. I would dearly love to find out more about them --- I have considerable information about the families prior to 1880. > Hi everyone; > > I'm researching Johnston, Lambert, Cumming(s), Pruden, Palan, Bryan, > Murdoch, Macleod, and Settee. > > Cheers! 2. I am researching the Joseph LeBlanc family....Joseph and Julie Bergeron were born Canadians but I do not know where. They married in MA and had 5 or their 6 children there. They came to Winnipeg around 1880 and over the years all of their children married from St. Boniface cathedral....I know that Julie died in Kenora, Ont and is buried there...but nobody seems to know what happened to Joseph. He was on the 1881 census, on the 1891 census he is not there but Julie is listed as married...in 1901 she is a widow. Their children were as follows: Alvina 1870 Exilda 1871 Napoleon 1873 Hormisdas 1877 Lea 1879 Joseph 1880 Cheryl

    3. Hi everyone, In response to Phyllis Haynen's request to list who's researching what names: I am looking for information on the family of George Early. George Early (originally spelled Earley) was a blacksmith who moved from Horton Township, On, to Morris MB in 1887 or possibly 1897, and later moved to Winnipeg. His wife was Sarah Jane Young. They are both buried in Elmwood Cemetary, Winnipeg. George was born in 1855 and died in 1920. He was living at 44 Elgin Ave when he died. He was a brother to Thomas Earley, who also lived in Winnipeg (I have the details of Thomas Earley's family). One of George's sisters, Margaret Earley, was married to Robert Dougall, who was one of my mother's grandfathers. Does anybody know anything about George Early and his family? His obituary does not mention any children. There is a nephew of his, Robert Stewart Earl(e)y who moved from Horton Township to Austin, MB, and I would like to fill in his descendants. I am also researching the family of Robert Dougall. He and his wife Margaret Earley moved to Winnipeg in 1879 (from Renfrew or Pembroke, On), and he was killed the following year in an explosion. I believe they had 4 children: Robert Earley Dougall, Andrew Dougall, Thomas Dougall, and Alexander Dougall, and there was a child Douglas Dougall from Robert Dougall's first marriage. Robert Earley Dougall was my mother's father. I am looking for information on them and their families. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thanks.........Marguerite Earley Willcock

    3. To all: I am doing a history of the Swiss, de Meuron, and de Watteville soldiers who settled in Lord Selkirk's Red River Colony between 1817 and 1821. They virtually all left the area after the flood in June 1826. Some of the Swiss names of interest are: Aebersold, Chatelain, Hofmann, Marchand, Monnier, Quinche, Rindisbacher, Scheidegger, Schirmer, and Stramm. The soldiers were Bain, Bruchler, Ehrler, Fournier, Gerber, Langet, Ostertag, Paquet, Polander, Schmid, and Verring. There were others. Any information from interested parties is welcomed as is contact with descendants of this group who later settled in American Midwest. Sincerely, Maralyn A. Wellauer swissmiss@execpc.com

    2. Jacki Humphrey: I'm new to this list and also to genealogy. I also have Canadian roots from Winnipeg. When you have time, I would appreciate you looking up grandparents in the death notices. My grandfather, Elia Slobodian died June 18, l947 and my grandmother, Evdokia Slobodian died June 5, l939, both in Winnipeg. My paternal grandparents, ANTONIW, their gravestones do not have a month nor day only the year. Their names are in Ukranian and I can't read them, but I think his was Theodore and hers was Dora. He died in l945 and she died l948. An e-mail angel sent me a copy of the Hamburg passenger list in which my grandparents and father were on it. The name was spelled ANTONOW. I know it's impossible to look when you don't even have a month to go by, but in looking for others and you come across an Antoniw/Antonow please tell me. 3. Is there a kind soul that would take a little time and look to see if there was a birth recorded, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, for my gr gr grandfather, Jesse KETCHUM. His birth date was June 14, 1857. Earlier reports said he was born in Lisbon, Ontario. Now I hold a birth certificate in my hand, of his youngest daughter and it states he was born in Winnipeg, Canada. If he shows up I would be very willing to pay the postage and copying costs if someone can get a copy of this for me. Please e-mail me at: barnsjk@power-net.net Regards, Kathy Londo Barnes

    3. Hi Jacki! I live in Maple Ridge, and I am wondering what local university you are referring to that has the Winnipeg Free Press. Are they available to the general public? I am quite limited to when I could go because of my work schedule, but I have such a list that I would like to look for that I wouldn't dare ask someone to look them all up!! If you have time though, could you add a few names to your lookup list? I would be very appreciative if you could see if there are obituaries available for: YOUNG RENNIE GREEN - died April 1922, Winnipeg and his wife - MARTHA (or MARGARET?) JANE GREEN - died 17 Mar 1963, Winnipeg JAMES HILTON - died 5 Oct 1925, Winnipeg and his wife - ELLEN HILTON - died 5 Apr 1921, Winnipeg I look forward to hearing from you! (If I've given you too much, just let me know - perhaps I could go to the library myself!) 3. The attachment was rejected. Sorry. Here it is: For Immediate Release August 1999 SELKIRK PROJECT UNDERWAY I am still actively collecting data pertaining to a select group of early Swiss emigrants who left Europe in 1821 and traveled together to Lord Selkirk’s colony on the Red River of the North in Western Canada. Presently, the location is near present-day Winnipeg, Manitoba. Beginning in 1823, entire families relocated to areas in the Minnesota and Wisconsin territories, Illinois, and Missouri. Others remained in the colony until 1826, when they too left for the United States. I am most interested in evaluating the extant primary source material relating to the migration, to identify the individual members of the group by name, age, occupation, and social status; and to determine the fate of the families. Of particular interest are personal accounts contained in contemporary letters, diaries, and colonial papers. The majority of the first group of Swiss in Wisconsin originated in cantons Bern and Neuchatel. Other cantons are represented as well. Approximately 44 families participated in this emigration, including Abram Perret (a.k.a. Abraham Perry,) and Benjamin Gervais, founders of St. Paul, Minnesota, the renowned artist, Peter Rindisbacher, and father of the famed Civil War General Augustus Louis (A.L.) Chetlain of Galena, Illinois. The project focuses around a core group of 10 Swiss families with the following surnames: Aebersold, Chatelain, Hofmann, Marchand, Monnier, Quinche, Rindisbacher, Scheidegger, Schirmer, and Stramm. The emigrant party also included a number of professional soldiers, of German, Swiss, and French origins, who were formerly attached to the de Meuron and de Watteville regiments. The names of primary interest are: Bain (Bane, Bayne,) Bruechler (Brickler,) Ehrler (Erler,) Fournier, Gerber, Langet, Ostertag (Osterday,) Paquet (Paquette,) Polander (Bollender,) Schmid (Schmidt,) and Verring (Varing). Correspondence relating to this group is welcomed. Please contact: Maralyn A. 3. In her reply to my offer Donna Coulter mentioned she was going to check to see what the Calgary Univ. had. In these days in instant access on the net to so much information it always surprises me how little people are aware of what the good old fashioned libraries have on hand. Most major Libraries have several newspapers on file. The main Vancouver library also has the Winnipeg Free Press but is missing about 15 yrs in the sixties and seventy and does not go back as far. I find university libraries to be the best. Simon Fraser has at least 20 papers and UBC I believe has more but is very hard for me to get there. The other advantage of university libraries are much better hours usually even opened on most holidays as student most get their assignments done. It is always a good idea to check with the librarian to see what your local resources are. You will be amazed. And not just with the Newspapers but the wealth of historical and social information available. The main Vancouver branch for example has the Birth Marriage and Deaths index's for Ontario (but not divorces which is the one I need) as well as BC. I believe they also have some Canadian Censuses but as Cloverdale library has them all as well as early Hudson Bay Records and tons or other stuff that is where I would go. They have half a floor of just Canada Genealogical records. It is so good that the local LDS FHC's have their library catalogue and refer people going Canadian research there. We may have it a little better out here on the coast. Must be something in the air but genealogy is very big out here. I have heard that the Burnaby FHC does 8 times the world average of number of people using the centre and seems to be getting busier all the time. And libraries like anywhere else work on supply and demand. The point of this is you should call your local libraries and see what they have. Even if they don't have what you need they can usually bring it in on an interlibrary loan. Although they have do not have a genealogy dept. the New Westminster Library is going to bring in the Ontario Divorce Index from the Ontario Archives for me. This costs for this service vary depending on the library and where the film or book you want has to come from. I know I am off topic again but a feel it is important that people realize they often have more available to them then they think. I am a book person and have been in love with libraries since I first discovered them at seven. I think it is a shame that this wonder free service is not more widely used to it's full potential. My children laugh at me. Who else do you know with five library cards and only 1 credit card. Just one other important point speaking of free services. Most university libraries charge a fair amount for a card if you are not enrolled or on staff. However, providing you do your research there and don't take out any books you can still use them free. 3. Thank you Jacki-- what a kind offer. I do have a look up that I would love to have but I am not at all sure of the date. I believe the early 1900's. So realizing that is an impossible request I only ask that if you ever run across the report on an accidental shooting in a wpg hotel brawl --- of FRANCIS (FRANK) E. TEDFORD.---- the victim. Keep me in mind. You have given me a tremendous idea tho.... perhaps Calgary Univ. has a similar resource. Frank was my uncle by marriage. Aunt Susie went home to ON in time for the 1901 census. So ---- perhaps ????--- there have only been rumors to go on.
