Someday, when I have nothing else to do, I'll try to index the above.... also have other refer. books, most of which are also in the lib and been great help to my family searches but glad to look for names, places etc for others as requested as time allows. Hello, Jacki: I have just joined the Winnipeg list and caught your message re BDM's in the Free Press. I am helping my husband research his great grandmother's family (originated in Doncaster, Yks & London, Eng.), and we have reached a standstill due to the fact that she often went by different last names. Her name at birth was Annie Steels or Johnson and she was born in abt 1897 in Dover, Kent, England. She met my husband's grt grandfather, Robert Stanley MacDonald (or McDonald) while he was stationed overseas. They married in Elham, Kent and then came to Canada after he was discharged (first they went to his hometown of Springhill, Nova Scotia, then moved west to Winnipeg). Annie & Robert divorced in the 1950's or 60's (dates unknown), and she apparently died in about 1973/74 in Winnipeg. None of the family members can find a copy of the obituary, so I was wondering if you would have time during one of your "sessions" to have a look for this obituary in the Free Press. I have pretty-well exhausted all avenues of research in England for Annie's family (which is proving to be quite elusive at the best of times). Annie & Robert had 4 children (3 are still living). Their son, Robert, Jr. passed away several years ago. In reciprocation for your assistance, I would like to offer my help with Winnipeg research, as I have in my possession some old (1950's/1960's) City Directory books for Winnipeg which provide the person's name, their occupation, their address and whether they owned or rented the house. They also provide the wife's name and as it is done alphabetically, it is easy to find others that were living at the same address (provided they are at least 18 years old). When it comes to names like "Smith" & "Jones", for example, it becomes a lot more difficult to group people together, however, with a little time, it can be done. My grandparents lived in Winnipeg for many, many years (Harrison & Anderson) so I have collected some Winnipeg resources for my research. Regards, Betty Stewart British Columbia
I was wondering if I may also prevail....I know that the family of my great great grandfather was living in Winnipeg from about 1880 through the late 1890s...A second cousin has recently supplied a missing piece of the puzzle...Joseph LeBlanc seemed to have disappeared between 1881 and 1891....well what I have learned is that he did in fact disappear....He drowned, along with an Indian guide, while doing surveying work for the Canadian Pacific Railroad...around 1884 to 1885...Since they lived in St. Boniface and his children were all married from the Cathedral there I wonder if there is any note of his passing anywhere...either in the church records or in an obituary.... the British Columbia archives are http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/index.htm they have been very helpful and SKS ( Pam) went to the Cloverdale Library and got me copies of the marriage and death certificates and with those I tracked some living relatives. Researching my GGGrandparents, WILLIAM COOK, b 1796, Ireland, d abt 1894, Carman District, Manitoba, and MISS SHEPARD, b abt 1806, Ireland, d abt 1890, Carman District. According to an article which appeared in the Winnipeg Free Press, dated Friday, January 27, abt 1885, wherein the couple were celebrating their 63rd wedding anniversary, their families came to Canada by way of New York and they were married at Mount Forest, Grey County, Ontario abt 1822. Hi Barb, You may want to focus on St. Clements and St. Andrews? I had someone ask me about these surnames before but, cannot put a name to the surname, as of yet. Poplar Point comes to mind too. Hello Listers: One of my cousins sent me a photocopy of a subpoena received by my Grandfather William Blackwell, along with a three other people to appear as witnesses in a manslaughter case preferred against Wells and Norton. It was dated May 29, 1919 and they ordered to appear "and herein fail not" on May 30th to the Police Court. Thinking along modern lines I thought that it would be a long shot to find any reference to this in the paper (trail probably months after event). However, two things worked in my favour. The justice system was much quicker in 1919 and it was during the General Strike resulting in some very small newspapers. While checking obits I figured I would check the end of May to see if there was a reference to trail in progress. Found an article in the paper on May 27, 1919. Headline "Three Are Arrested Following Inquest" Sub Headline: "Apprehended on Verdict of Corner's Jury Enquiring Into Woman's Death" ..."The jury after hearing the evidence returned the following verdict: "The said Mrs. Ethel Laundrie came to her death on the 22nd day of May, 1919 at the North Winnipeg hospital from septic peritonitis resulting from an illegal operation not performed at said hospital" The article goes on to summarize some to the evidence including a statement from a neigbour one of the other three subpoenaed. But what really got my interest was that Mrs. Laundrie made a statement to a nurse shortly before her death that was witnessed by her sister. Person named as sister was my aunt meaning that the decreased was also my aunt. I am interested in getting a transcript of the coroners inquest as well as the trail. Does anyone know where these can be obtained and the procedure for ordering them. Jacki Humphrey
I updated the web site. Added the link to the Vital Statistics web page, created a births page and a marriages page. I added some of my ancestors that were born in Winnipeg. Wouldn't you know it, I don't have marriage dates for any ancestors married in Winnipeg. I know they were married in Winnipeg and only guess by when their children were born. I wish somebody could help me there. If you have births or marriages for ancestors from the Winnipeg District, send me an e-mail and I'll post them. Hi I am looking for any information on my 2x great grandfather James John Wilson. He was born in Winnipeg in 1886, possibly West Kildonan area. I have not been able to locate any birth records of any sort. I have tried Vital Statistics, the Diocese of Ruperts Land and the Manitoba Archives. I was told that his father Jacob Wilson was Scottish and came over from the Orkney Islands to work for the Hudson Bay Company. I have not had any luck there at getting anything solid. His mother Henrietta Rise (Rose) was French and Cree is what I am told. James John Wilson was raised Anglican and went to a boys Mission School of some sort in Winnipeg. I know a little about him as an adult as my grandmother is still living and has filled in some of the gaps but as far as his parents go no one knows anything about them. I would like to find a baptism record so that I can continue researching, hoping it will give some information on his parents. My grandmother says that she remembers her father saying that his birth was in a church bible and so I know that it is out there somewhere. Does anyone have any ideas on where I could look next. I am fresh out of ideas as where to look next. I have his death record and his marriage record but nothing that gives me any great leads as to where he was actually born. I have been looking at the MB-WINNIPEG list for a little while but I have not posted my interests yet. Specifically, I am looking for the Descendants of EDWARD SNELSON and ELIZABETH ANN FRY who were married in Oaklake Manitoba 23 February, 1888. I have found Edward's name on the Dominion Land Grant index from the National Archives and I am waiting for the actual film. I have never seen one of these films, so I am not sure what information I will get. I have also ordered the 1891 and 1901 Brandon/Virden censuses to see if I can find this couple and whether they had children. Am I going along the right track? Shelley , Me again I just found the vital statistics email. I emailed them and asked the price and they answered. They where e-mailing the certificates but I couldn't get them to come through so they faxed them. Coralynn
Shelley I just ordered a certificate of birth for my dad and it was $25. They faxed a list of prices etc and applications and I just photo copied them so I would have a few. the phone number is (204) 945-5500 and fax (204) 948-3128. I can't find the email address but I found it on the internet really easy when I was looking. Coralynn in Quesnel B.C.
