    1. [CAN-MB-WINNIPEG-L] Railroad employees search
    2. Peter Willcock
    3. I am looking for information on a great-uncle Thomas S. Dougall, who was a railroad engineer. Born in 1879, lived in Winnipeg, so could have been working about 1900-1945 period. I don't know which railroad. I recall recently somebody asking the list if it was possible to find out any information from railroad about former employees. Could that person please tell me what the answer was, or is there an archive for this list? Thanks.........Marguerite Willcock Also looking for Thomas's brothers Robert, Douglas, John, and Alexander Dougall.

Barb - I've been checking out "Rockwood Echoes" for the familiar name STRATTON and have spotted several references to IRA STRATTON and JOHN STRATTON and their relationship to Stonewall, their work there, etc. No mention of a relationship between them. Then found a bibliography of JOHN A. SRATTON - b. in Colborne, Ont, ... married boyhood sweetheart (unnamed) .. brought his mother & other family members out ... younger brother the Rev. W.H. Stratton ... etc. IRA STRATTON : b. in Northumberland County, Ontario in 1865, UEL stock ... teacher... came to Manitobe in 1887 ... taught Rockwood school 1891-1893 .. mother, sisters Barbara & Ethel, & brother Will came to Stonewall, while some other family members went to California, ... editor of Stonewall Argus ... married Mary Oughton in 1911 ... he died in 1943. Their son Wilfred died in 1945; Mrs Stratton moved to BC "where two daughters reside." She died in 1959 ... Any connection ? Maude Bowen Island

I find it sometimes, a help and easy to use but often decided the cost of the xtras not worth it altho I have found a few of my family in their files when working the US. I started gene at the LDS family lib where ever I have lived on the west coast incl. BC and they def. are best source of info if you have access to them. With so much available on websites and places like Rootsweb that offer so much, having the PC and prog with gd format can get you going. Note you were glad for all the answers you rcvd. 2. S. Arundel Ross
    3. Barb - I have a copy of "Stonewall, Turning a Century", printed in 1978, and a rather battered old copy of "Rockwood Echoes". printed in 1960. (Actually the latter is more than battered - someone must have dropped it while reading in the bathtub, and some pages are stuck together.) Neither of the books is indexed, alas, but given time I could scan them for your surnames. I remember a lovely old stone house in which the STRATTON family lived - probably your Strattons?. Also, in case anyone else is researching my family: SAMUEL JACOB JACKSON, founder of Stonewall, and his wife IDA ISABEL CLARK, were my great grandparents. HERBERT ARTHUR ARUNDEL and MAUDE KATHLEEN JACKSON were my grandparents, also living in Stonewall. Maude Bowen Island, BC

    1. [CAN-MB-WINNIPEG-L] THANKS FOR THE HELP!
    2. Dear Friends, To all of you Fulton, Winnipeg and Blair folks who took the time to respond to my GEDCOM and Software question a big THANK YOU!! I now know the meaning of GEDCOM and have received software advice and recommendations. The popular product seems to be Family Tree Maker though many don't like the fact that their info is later sold to others....so much for free genealogy on the web! I am not yet decided but have a few days to mull it over before the new computer arrives and all of your input has given lots to ponder! Thanks again, Roberta in Vancouver, WA

The programme does it all for you, no worries at all. Just yesterday I upgraded my version 4.4 to Version 7 and it was a snap. Everything is still there and I have over 2000 names. Mind you I did make a backup disk before I started as an insurance policy. I have always been satisfied with the product and find it does everything I require. I have never bought any of the extras they sell. I don't feel it necessary unless you have lots of people in the States but I have used their free Webpages. At the moment I have deleted mine because we found some changes in our trees where we had made the wrong assumptions. Hope this helps. Audrey in Ingersoll, Ontario

    3. Definition: GEDCOM is a standard file format for exchanging information between genealogy programs. The acronym GEDCOM stands for GEnealogical Data COMmunications. The Family History Department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) developed the GEDCOM standard. You can use GEDCOM to transfer information into Family Tree Maker from another genealogy program that supports GEDCOM and vice versa. By using GEDCOM, you can avoid retyping all of your family information when you switch from one program to another. Genealogy Software: Family Tree Maker is #1 best-selling software. Personally, this is the only software program I have used. I have used it since version 2.0 (ver. 7 just came out). The extras a person could buy, but doesn't have to: CD's of transcribed books, census records, passenger lists, family tree's donated by others, etc. You can try before you buy Family Tree Maker at http://www.familytreemaker.com/trial.html I think it's best to try and decide for yourself. I've viewed a couple other programs and thought they were too "techie". I prefer the program to keep the programming in the background. 3. Hi everyone This is a new posting. Looking for information on JAMES BRIGHAM, who emigrated with wife MARY LIGHTLY RUTHERFORD, from Berwick on Tweed in Northumberland sometime between 1897 and 1914. The family ended up in Winnipeg - don't know if they were elsewhere in Canada before that. Siblings of James Brigham also emigrated - possibly at the same time. Looking for date of emigration, sibling names, dates of deaths - and anything else, really. Also looking for the same for DAVID GREENLAW and wife MARGARET LAUDER. I have them in Biggar, county of Lanark in Scotland in 1898. They also emigrated during the same time period, and also ended up in Winnipeg, prior to the First WW. There were several children, born in Scotland, probably some born in Canada. Thanks for any help anyone can give me! Bev Brigham

    3. Hi! Can anyone help me find a cemetery near Elgin, Manitoba? My great-grandfather George Carter and possibly wife with maiden name of Morrison came there to farm in late 1800s or early 1900s, and supposedly are buried somewhere there. Their sons Charles and Alfred left (they were born 1884 & 1886). The daughters Minerva and Bertha were with them. Minerva Carter reportedly married a Wilmer McBurney and they had Thomas, Bertha and George (who may still be living, according to aging cousin in Ontario). I am going to Ireland next week and would really love being able to find where George Carter came from. On everything Alfred wrote he put "Irish", so I am trying hard!

Each of these families originated in the U.K., emigrated to Canada, moved to Ontario and finally settled in Manitoba, namely Rockwood Country - Stonewall, Balmoral, et al. A few days ago I was able to quickly look through two fabulous books, one of which was entitled "100 YEARS OF HISTORY - ROCKWOOD MUNICIPALITY". Would anyone out there know if or where I would find a copy of this and any other books written about the above-mentioned communities. Any and all help with my quests would be very much appreciated.
