Hello list Is there anyone on this list that could tell me if there was a known Orphanage in Manitoba around the Winnipeg area about the time of 1845-1870? I need a reference as to where I can find further information for records of children that were sent there and ANY information you may have in regards to location, history etc...???? I do not know the name of this orphange. I just learned one of my ancestors, RACHAEL CAVALIER was put there and married a man she met at this orphange by the name of CUTHBERT (CORBERT) GLADU. Appreciated Jan
My ggrandmother spent several years in an orphanage in Winnipeg at the turn of the century. We didn't know the name of it but found it on the website below. It was then called the "Childrens Home of Winnipeg." This was one of the oldest, operating from around 1880 thru 1946. There is an internet site called Legends and Legacies which can be found at the url below. Click here: Legends & Legacies - Orphanages I contacted the Provincial Archives to gain access to the Children's Home's records. It took a little time but eventually my request was granted and copies of excerpts from the records were sent to me. here is the name and address of the woman I corresponded with. Jodi Baltessen Head, Textual Records and Public Service, Historical Archives Section Provincial Archives 200 Vaughn Street Winnipeg, MB R3C 1T5 FAX: (204) 948-2008 I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck! Date: Sun, 24 Oct 1999 13:20:15 -0500 From: "Holly & Scott" <voila@netcom.ca> Subject: Petitions to Continue (Post-1901 Census) Greetings Listers. The extended deadline of 31 October for the Post 1901 Census petition to the House of Commons is rapidly approaching. To date I have received almost 5000 signatures to be sent in on 1 November. While 5000 signatures seems a lot, when you consider our petition is Canada wide it is not a fantastic number. While it was necessary to set some kind of deadline in order to have a reasonable number of petitions to send at one time to MP Murray Calder, this does not mean that we can sit back and say that we are finished. Far from it. The deadline is now removed and we will continue to accept petitions which will be sent in on a periodic basis until we achieve our goal. Petitions for Canada are to be sent to myself while petitions for those outside of Canada will continue to be sent to Muriel Davidson. Addresses are included on the cover pages of both petitions that are downloadable from http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census A word about the petitions. It is important that those in Canada use the Canada petition while those outside of Canada use the Non-Canada petition. They are directed to two different places. The petition for Canada is directed To the House of Commons while the petition for those outside of Canada is directed to Senator Lorna Milne for support of her Bill to be presented shortly in the Senate. The petition to the House of Commons, by the rules of the House, may be signed ONLY by residents of Canada. The petition for those outside of Canada may be signed by anyone. Do not attempt to change the wording of the petitions in any way. They have been worded the way they are for particular reasons. Any attempt to change the wording, either by crossing out and/or adding words will cause the petition to be voided by the government gurus. They have specific guidelines about what can, and cannot, be done with petitions. Changing wording of petitions is a NO-NO. While the goal of our committee was to have a single petition (hopefully breaking records for numbers of signatures) we realize that we are by no means the only group to be presenting petitions for the release of Post 1901 Census information. Other groups have petitions as well. Signers of petitions should sign the same petition only once. That does not mean however that they cannot sign a different petition having a similar goal. If you have already signed our petition, by all means sign petitions of other groups. Conversely, having signed a petition from another group does not prevent you from signing ours. Having signed our petition to the House of Commons does not prevent you from signing another petition directed to either the House, or to the Senate of Canada. While the thrust of this message has been regarding petitions do not forget to continue writing letters to your MP, John Manley, Sheila Copps and anyone else you can think of to further our cause. Letters and calls to newspapers, talk show hosts, TV stations etc. all have an effect. We cannot afford to "rest on our laurels". Please feel free to forward my postings re: Post 1901 Census to any and all lists, Family History Societies and/or newsletters to which you belong or subscribe. Thank you all for your continuing interest and support. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Colleen There is/was a AimeCarriere/Carrier living just east of Dominion City as of 1985 when I was last visiting there. Winnifred Nisely's daughter, Hazel, married Aime Carriere/Carrier of St. Malo in 1961. Aime is the son of William Carriere. Winnifred Nisely (nee Hamblin) was a young girl (elementary school age) when her father Fred purchased my great grandfather's farm in 1920. I really don't have an address but expect that a box number in Dominion City would get you there. The Canada 411 directory might help too. I am searching Reuban Cross born 1859 in Simcoe County, Ontario. In the 1900's he was a Methodist Minister in Manitoba. There was an article in the Chatelaine magazine about the Cross family, unfortunately I do not know the year. His parents were John Cross born 1820 and Lucy Cross (Stamp) born Dundas County, Ontario. Married in February 1847 in Hainesville, Dundas County, Ontario. They were German decent. Is there other Cross researchers in Manitoba. Thank you in advance Judy Georgetown, Ontario
I have both applications here, the Genealogical Search form and the other form which does not say if it was for a long form certificate but I know it was because that is what I needed at the time. On the back it states that certificates contain information extracted from the original registration filed in our office. Birth Cert. full name of person, Date of Birth, Place of Birth, Sex, Registration Number and Date --Long Form contains the above info plus the given names or initials and surnames of the parents Marriage Cert. same as above - long form as above with the parents names of the bride and groom Death certificate - sounds like there is only a long form = name of person, date of death, place of Death age, sex and registration number and date. It goes on to state ' A restricted certified photocopy contains all the information appearing on the original registration. Restricted certified copies are rarely needed by citizens and are by law for restricted use only. If you believe you need such a copy, a detailed explanation must be given when requesting this document as to why it is required' (this was a form MG-1607). The Genealogical app. is form (MG-6874) (unless they have revamped them as governments are inclined to do) The Genealogical Search Application state - The document issued is a certified photocopy of the registration of the event on file in this office which is stamped "Genealogical Purposes Only" The certified copies contain information exactly as recorded on the original registration, and although the information may differ from your application, it cannot be amended at this time. I don't know if this really all that clear. I remember when I sent for my husbands birth certificate 30 years ago I just wrote them a letter, but like all progress now you have to fill everything out in triplicate. Just noticed a section on the application form I described first (this is the one that was multiple parts) you have to tick Wallet Format, Long Format or Restricted Usage. It was the restricted usage that I had to mark due to the reason I was applying. Hope this helps someone. Carol Lylyk Calgary, Alberta
Hi List, I received my great-grandfather's birth cert from the state of NY, hoping to find some new information, he is from Canada? How, where, would I start to look? Edmond Roy born apx 1855, Canada Thank you, Terre
Last Spring I picked up a Manotioba Family Services Vital Statistics form "Application for Genealogical Search" which I was told you use to apply for birth/marriage/etc certificate searches. I think I got it at the Manitoba Genealogical Society office. The form doesn't say anything about a long or short certificate. I sent it in several weeks ago....still patiently waiting. I'll be very annoyed if I get a "short" certificate with no useful info. Hello, My name is Gordon Hall and I am a new subscriber to the list. I am currently researching the GOODRAM surname in the Bolton area of Lancashire, England. My purpose in joining is to locate details and possible decendants of my first cousin Priscilla GOODRAM. The only information I have is that Priscilla was born in 1921 at Bolton, Lancashire and was the daughter of Peter and Priscilla GOODRAM (nee YATES). I believe Priscilla to be the only girl of nine children, her brothers were - Edward, John, Peter, Herbert, Joseph, Albert, James and Henry. It is believed that Priscilla left England shortly after the end of WW2, with her future husband, who was in the Canadian services, and settled in Canada. I do not know the surname of her husband or in which area they settled. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who may be able to help me, or point me in the right direction. Best Regards, Gordon Hall Bolton. Lancashire, ENG glhall.research@virgin.net
