    1. [MBWINNIPEG-L] Senator Lorna Milne speaks about selected panel
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. I have the excerpt from Hansard, 2nd Session, Vol 138, Issue 7 Tuesday, Nov 16, with The Hon. Gildas L. Molgat, Speaker: Sen. Milne: ----last Friday, Minister (John) Manley announced the creation of a panel on access to historical census records. The panel will report by May 31, 2000 with recommendations that will balance the need to protect personal privacy with the demands of genealogists...." (ask me for complete item) Senator Lorna Milne will soon be presenting her Private Senators' Bill on our behalf and letters and e-mails are welcome at my address. Petitions are available -- will be sent by attachment, in Word or WordPerfect. Muriel M. Davidson <Farquhar@netcom.ca> 25 Crestview Ave., Brampton, Ontario L6W 2R8 <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html>

    1. [MBWINNIPEG-L] Manitoba Archives
    2. Audrey & Ray Staines
    3. Many thanks to those who wrote with their experiences with the Manitoba Archives. It seems I should be prepared for a wait. I think I will E-mail them again. My last E-mail went in the form of a forwarded message, as I had a mistake in the address, and I have a feeling they do not open things that look as though they have an attachment. Probably policy to ward off viruses. I am just trying to find out how much they will charge me to photocopy the Land Grant files of two of my ancestors. It really does not further my research by much but the one I got from Saskatchewan is certainly extremely interesting. I like my genealogy to be more than a mere list of names. Thanks again to all Audrey in Ingersoll, Ontario.

    1. [MBWINNIPEG-L] MANITOBA CERTIFICATES
    2. coralynn
    3. I feel extremely lucky . I sent for a birth certificate and received an invoince within a couple of weeks. I did email though because the certificate wasn't here within 15 days like they say on the form. They told me 6-8 weeks. I had it within that time. I have just sent for 3 more 2 weeks ago and still don't have my invoice so maybe they are getting backed up now. I also agree on how different provinces are. I live in B.C. now and have found getting info so easy. My home province of Manitoba seems a little greedy and wants money for something we could get off the internet and library like here. Gets kinda expensive. Coralynn in B.C.

    3. Audrey and Ray, we just got something from the MB Vital Statistics. In 1 case we got the full marriage cert, and in the other they couldn't find any record of the individual's birth. The surname was slightly misspelled on the marriage cert., so they do look for variations. Costs $25 per search item for genealogical searches. They told me current wait was 8-10 weeks, and I think it did take 10 or maybe 11 weeks. We found the best thing is to phone them, and they'll send you the search application form. Think you can get the phone number off the web site. 2. On a positive note I must say that a couple of years ago I had excellent service from the Manitoba Archives in looking up and providing homestead information and copies and furthermore in offering to search out testamentary records etc. And at no charge!! Indeed in 20 years of genealogical research both here and in Great Britain it was the best record office experience I ever had. Allan Gray, Austin Texas and former Winnipeger.

    3. I too got burned by the "no guarantee" policy. I've got several solids references that said my uncle was born in Manitoba, but yet after 13 weeks of waiting they said they have no record. Very disappointed in their helpfulness. Even though their form said that you would have an answer within 15 business days they verbally said 10 - 12 weeks. 1. [MBWINNIPEG-L] Keep the PRESSURE On The Politicians re CENSUS!!!
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all researchers and genealogists, whether present or future:- We need to keep the pressure on the politicians by LETTERS, which may be mailed directly to Ottawa -- FREE postage. I will also accept any letters -- these are all mailed, but ones with a personal signature are better and legal. Politicians like to collect these!!! Let's smother our elected Members with E-MAILS? I am certain IF enough are received, that MP will sit up and notice! E-MAILS are still being received by me, but must be directed to the Senator or Member of Parliament, with name/address. <http://www.parl.gc.ca/36/senmemb/house/MemberList.asp?Lang=W> Now that the fire has STARTED to burn, let's double the pressure!!! We have a willing committee, ready to help you in all provinces. We all need the Post-1901 Census Records to complete research. Muriel M. 3. Hello: In wonder if anyone can give me the answer to this? I wrote by E-mail to the Manitoba Archives about a week ago and I have had no reply. Is this usual? Would I be better off to contact them by regular mail? I am interested in getting copies of the registration, application and patent Grants for two locations that belonged to my ancestors. Does anyone know the procedure, price, etc? I have had extremely good service from the Saskatchewan Archives for the same type of copies and I am disappointed that I am not getting the same from Manitoba. It is interesting how every Province has its own methods. Look at the vital records for British Columbia, for instance, so useful! Thanks in advance Audrey in Ingersoll, Ontario.

    3. Greetings, I am trying to locate some of the descendants of Fred and Maggie Brown, who want to exchange information on our ancestors. Fredric Joseph Brown, (1869 - 1945) married Margaret Finlay (1875 - 1951), and they had 8 children. Fred was the son of Zachariah and Elizabeth Brown, and was a stone mason, by trade. Around 1894, Zachariah and Elizabeth Brown, with their 12 children, emigrated from Proton Township, Grey County, Ontario, to Killarney, Manitoba. This is where Fred built many homes, barns, from the natural stone found there. Fred and Maggie moved to Winnipeg, and lived at 305 King Edward Street, for many years. In fact there was a Brown listed in the Winnipeg phone book, as late as the middle 1990's, at this same address. My grandfather was Robert (Bob) Brown, elder brother to Fred. Any assistance would be appreciated, -- Ross Doherty, Saskatoon
