    3. I beg to differ with you or I've been reading my history wrong but Manitoba became a province July 15 1870. I've viewed censuses since that date which I believe were Federal. Hugh

    3. Manitoba did not officially become a province of Canada until 1905 - the first census should have been released in 1998, but the 1906 law cancelled all census records. Registrations of births, deaths and marriages became law in Canada in 1867. Muriel M. Davidson <Farquhar@netcom.ca> coralynn wrote: > > I just received an answer to a Death Certificate search. My sister was able to get our Grandfathers certificate from there in 1907. Wakopa wqould be if my memory serves me right in Turtle Mountain Municipality, and the address would be Killarney now. Hugh

    3. Dear Coralynn; I concur with Hugh's recent comment. I received death certificate copies for my g-grandmother Mary Rombough and her Aunt Nancy Rombough through regional services provided in Dominion City. This was handled by Nancy's grandson who lives near Dominion City about 11 years ago. I cannot be sure this regional service is still available in Manitoba though - especially in light of the monumental flood in the region two summers ago. 1. [MBWINNIPEG-L] A Prayer for Genealogists and Historians
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Here is a prayer that I think all genealogist & historians should say once in awhile. I hope you like it. Achievement comes with searching Searching comes with attainment Attainment comes with patience Patience comes with consequence Consequence comes with finding Finding comes with results Results come with productivity Productivity is seeking - finding one cannot always hope to achieve with the sole purpose of pressing a button and coming up with an answer immediately. However it is rewarding when you come up with the answer. Contributed by Nettie Nickel -- with thanks!! Muriel M. Davidson <Farquhar@netcom.ca> <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html>

    3. Looking for information on Felix Chenier. He was born in 1843 in St Hermas, Quebec, but moved to Manitoba in around 1870 where he volunteered for service with the Wolseley Expedition. In 1871 he was called to the Manitoba bar and later appointed the first registrant of deeds. Trying to find out more information of Marie Sarah Levina Poitras whom he married in 1871 at Bale St. Paul, Manitoba. Does anyone know how to find the marriage certificate for this event ? Any help would be appreciated. 1. [MBWINNIPEG-L] RUSSELL, MANITOBA
    2. Mary Lorraine Guzar
    3. Hello: Is there someone out there from Russell, Manitoba? I have been searching for a cemetery called Minniska and am told that my husband's gr.gr. grandfather is buried there. He was supposedly the first burial in that cemetery. He died in the fall of 1903. His name is Herman LOPTHIEN. I have searched all over the internet (cemetery sites, telephone directories, lists)as well as written to the Manitoba Genealogical society but have come up empty on all counts. I have also been told that Minniska Cemetery is in the Russell, Manitoba area. I am looking for a mailing address for this cemetery as I would like to request some records. Thanks for any help. Mary Lorraine.

They do not answer my Email. Perhaps I will have to resort to snail mail, or "horrors!" the telephone! Audrey in Ingersoll, Ontario.

    1. [MBWINNIPEG-L] CANADIANS -- Your Signatures are Requested!!
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all: Many of us, of varying ages, attempt to create our personal family history, using mainly census records, plus church and other records: school, deeds, wills, probate, etc. UNLESS WE ARE SUCCESSFUL IN OBTAINING RELEASE OF POST-1901 CENSUS RECORDS, THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER CENSUS TO VIEW The above sounds harsh -- but it is true!! The 1901 Census COULD be our last census records for Canada. Canadians and Non-Canadians are requested to help us in this Census Fight!! In the House of Commons, only petitions from Canadians are accepted, and letters must be signed personally. E-Mails MIGHT be more acceptable if the present Bill C-6 is passed. (Deals with Electronic Messaging) In the Senate of Canada, BOTH Canadians and Non-Canadians are invited to contribute letters to Senator Lorna Milne (Peel County, Ontario) and E-mails are welcome if directed to her. The MENU of PETITIONS includes: English & French Language for House of Commons (Canadians only) English & French Language for Senate of Canada (Canadians only) Non-Canadian Petition in English Looking forward to your help!! We post by attachment or petitions are downloadable <http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/index.htm> I still accept ALL Letters and E-mails, print them and mail. Muriel M. Davidson <Farquhar@netcom.ca> <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html>

    1. [MBWINNIPEG-L] Main Reason Why 1906 Law was Passed
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. The two provinces, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, are the main reason the 1906 law was passed - the provinces were new to Canada -- the Canadian government wanted the census so made promises -- these now affect all genealogists & researchers. One writer has suggested Senator Lowell Murray receive MANY MANY letters if YOU do not agree with him. Should you wish to write letters, giving him ????, you may send direct with free postage or to my e-mail address. Senator Lorna Milne also likes YES letters and we have petitions -- just ask -- I have these and receive her mail. Muriel M. Davidson <Farquhar@netcom.ca> <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html> ======================================================== NOTE: The following Hansard item is lengthy, I did not post it. Taken from House of Commons Hansard for 15 November 1999 Excerpt from Senator Lowell Murray speaking again about Bill C-6 -

    3. Hi Phyllis I think I messed up earlier when I answered you Sorry I don't have one planned But .....You are more than welcome to plan one anytime you wish. You will have others dropping in and out but most people have roots elsewhere. Just send your time and date to the list and If I am at work or not there just make sure everyone keeps on topic of Genealogy for the Most part. I understand small talk has to be to have a friendly chat room but just don't want small talk talking over the chat if you understand what I am saying. Have fun with it.
