    2. I lived in Winnipeg as a boy - I think there was a Charleswood Community within Winnipeg - sort of a sub-division. People would say they lived in Charleswood like they would say they lived in the West End or St. Vital.

    2. Hi Listers, Marg wrote the following query about Brookside Cemetery. If any of you good Winnipegers have access to records or transcript, I would also be very interested. I have both McAmmond and Pull relatives buried there, and would be interested in any info that can be obtained. November 6, 1855, d. July 15, 1841, says that he was buried in Brookside Cemetery. Is that in Winnipeg and does anyone have a transcript for that Cemetery and wouldn't mind looking to see if he is indeed there, as well as any other people with the last name of Bacon? Thank you very much! Marg >>

    2. Hugh C. Masson
    3. Hi List Members; I've been trying to trace the movements of my Grandmother (Jane Rathburn Affleck). Family tradition has it that she came to Winnipeg by ox cart with a bible and a dictionery to teach school. What I know for a fact is she transfered membership from the Congregational Church at Middleville, Ontario to the First Presbyterian Church in Winnipeg in 1874. Than we find here back east in 1876 attending the First Class of the Ottawa Normal School. Than in the summer of 1878 She transfered membership from Middleville to the Congregational Church in Winnipeg. The first firm record we have of her being in Winnipeg is her Marriage to James Masson Feb 2 1880. I've searched the records in the basement of the Knox United Church but they were in disorder and I didn't have time to check for attendannce records which would prove her being there or not. The only thing I found was the Baptism of my Father in March of 1881. What I'd like to know what schools were opperating in Winnipeg in the 1870's. And is there any record of the teachers empoyed than. Thanking you for any help or direction you can give me. Thanking you in advance for any pointers. I remain yours truly Hugh

    3. Hello Hugh, Sorry I do not have any ideas or pointers for you with regard to your search in Winnipeg..just wanted to say it is the first time, outside of our family conversations, that I have heard anyone mention Knox Church in Winnipeg. My husband's grandmother was a twin sister to Rev. Franklin Small who Pastored this church for many years in the early 1900's. He was born in Ravenna, Ontario. We have been searching for John Herbert Gillson, my husband's grandfather ( Rev. Small's bro-in-law) who left Ontario with his wife Frances and 3 children and migrated in Winnipeg in early 1900's, they had another child and he simply disappeared sometime around 1907-1910. Would you have any ideas if there were any uprisings or what might have been going on there during the this time frame? John was born in 1870 in Collingwood, Ontario. Have you an address and phone number on the Knox Church? Hope you find your ancestor..it is fun..but sometimes discouraging. Thanks for a reply about the church. Mary Hugh C. 3. Hello Coralynn, I read, with great interest, your posting regarding John Bateman. My husband's grandmother was Charlotte Elizabeth Bateman, b. July 18, 1879. Her father was John James Bateman, b. 11-02-1856 in St. Elbans, Herfordshire, England, d. 11-13-1891 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Charlotte had a brother named James Bateman, Jr., b. 7-16-1875 in Boston, Ma. and d. as a child 5-03-1877. Our Charlotte Elizabeth married Albert Ernest Turvey and migrated into Edmondton, Alberta sometime around 1920-30..both Albert and Charlotte are buried in Edmondton. Just wondering if there is any connection here. If so let me know and I'll dig up the rest of the family history on the Bateman side and let you know. 3. Hi Coralynn, Well, I tried calling all afternoon, but to no avail. Do you have any other info for James, middle name, birth date, obit? If you have a specific date of death I could look for an obit at the Legislative Library(I'll be there on tuesday to do some research), or in our public library. You could also order a death certificate through vital statistics if you have a date. If I'm not mistaken the cost is 25 dollars. Maybe give me some background information and I'll see what I can find for you. If all else fails I could do a walk through once it warms up a little(27 below this morning!!)since I live right here in St James.
