Hello Sue, I am searching for my husband's grandfather named John Herbert Gillson, b. 1870 in Collingwood, Ont. He married a Frances Small in 1894 and they migrated to Winnipeg abt. 1899. John simply disappeared..never to be heard from again..this was about 1907-1910. He left a wife and 4 children. Please, if you ever come across the name J.H. Gillson, in any records, I would appreciate hearing from you. I believe John's wife, Frances, their daughter Laura Frances Williams, a son Charles Leslie and a son Herbert are all buried there. Thank you if you ever see anything on this family and can drop me an email. Best regards, Mary Turvey marcat@ameritech.net Sue Jensen wrote: > > Everyone: > A genealogical buddy who lives in Winnipeg called the Elmwood cemetery > in the last few days and got the actual grave locations of my > relatives, by giving the death dates. Everyone: A genealogical buddy who lives in Winnipeg called the Elmwood cemetery in the last few days and got the actual grave locations of my relatives, by giving the death dates. She also told me that the MGS doesn't have the Elmwood cemetery transcribed yet. I wonder if there is some way all of us with a relative <g> interest in Elmwood could volunteer to do some transcribing? Also, I have been posting obits to the Winnipeg District Obit page and a lot of them have Elmwood as the cemetery for the interment. Perhaps some of us could look up the Obit page and find out for sure if our relatives are buried in Elmwood. Sue

Margaret; The only record of who is buried in Elmwood is a handwritten book of which there is only one copy at the Elmwood cemetery office. The people with the best chance of having a copy of this book is the Manitoba Genealogical Society at http://www.mbnet.mb.ca/~mgs/. They have a project of transcribing cemeteries and maintaining indexes. See their web page for more info. When I was last at the Elmwood office I asked if I could spend time looking through the book or get a copy of some pages the clerk wasn't very cooperative. She would only look for specific names on specific dates. :-( Murray P.S. Perhaps the Manitoba Archives also have a copy but you have to research those archives in person.
Hi Catherine; The Canadian 1901 census has been put on microfilm and is available in most major Public libraries in Canada. If you are in the USA I would suggest trying to get a "inter-library loan" of these microfilms at your local library. I would expect some library in the US would have a copy of these microfilms. I don't know how useful it will be to members of this listserve but I was already planning to go to Elmwood to take some more grave pictures. The only problem is I won't be doing this until July of this year. The area of the cemetery in danger is really obvious (on the edge of a huge cliff overlooking the river) and I would be happy to record for everyone the family names on any graves in danger. If your ancestor is in one of the endangered gravesites I think the City of Winnipeg would be your only recourse. I can also try to take a very limited number of pictures of graves when I visit Elmwood in July and email scanned images. I can only help with people who are known to be buried in Elmwood and the exact date of interment is known. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Regards, Murray Gauer GAUER Page: users.uniserve.com/~morbeus/ GRHS VC Birsula/Nesselrode/Rosenfeld,OD Researching: GAUER, SCHMALENBURG, HERTZ (HERZ,HERTY), LEONHART(IN) KUNZ (CUNZ, CUNTZ), MASSIERER, MEURER, DREGER From: BEDRYKOWICE, ZALESZCZYKI, BIRSULA, NESSELRODE, DIENSTWEILER
Do you know if 487 and 497 Mc Millan still exists? That is where my Grandmother lived. She lived at 487 before she was married and at 497 after she married her seconc husband. Do you know anyone who can look up the 1901 census? I would like to find out, birth dates, names of other siblings and father's name. Without those I have hit a brick wall. I only have a few names and no dates. All the information I have came from post cards written to my Grandmother when she was in Paris and for about 10 years after. And then a few pictures that have writing on them. Thanks Catherine
I can try and see what I can get.. You will have to give me a bit, because I am unsure if it is open in the winter. I am also finishing up with kids hockey tournaments for the next 4 weekends. I live 30 miles from the city of Winnipeg but I can see what I can do if you can be give me some time. unless someone can get there before me. who knows I may find some of mine while looking...I didn't know I had any family in Portage La Prairie and found my ggrandparents in that cem. (FACT) with the help of others. Toni
I would also like to know who is buried in Elmwood as not only my husbands family is there but both my mother's and father's, so please let me know about any list for the cemetery as well. Would anyone living in Winnipeg be able to get a printout of those buried in Elmwood cemetary? I would gladly pay for a copy of who is buried, and the plot number, and postage, and any other costs to obtain a printout. I live in Comox, BC, and my husband's greatgrandfather and grandmother are buried there (but that is all the info we have from the obits). Margaret
If anyone lives near Elmwood Cemetery and would like to take pictures of some graves, I would be willing to reimburse the expense. It seems there are quite a few of us that have relatives there. Thanks. Carla Schade Rochester, MI
Found where 'Belcourt' was on the following site: http://GeoNames.NRCan.gc.ca I selected 'Historical' for the name, and found it was unincorportated, and approx 1 mile from Reaburn, 5 miles from Baie St Paul, 5 miles from Mrquette, 6 miles from Meadow Lea, and 6 miles from Poplar Point. Belcourt was just north west of Portage La Prairie according to this web site (it gives the latitude and longitudes,so will have get a chart so I can pinpoint exactly) This site is hosted by Natural Resources Canada, Geomatics Canada, and is in both English and French. I think its great when you are trying to find a place that no longer exists on the maps of Canada.
I really don't know much about who is in the cemetery.. I do belive that it is a very old cemetery with alot of graves. So it would take a good bit of time to go to each one and look to find out. I really don't know who you would get a hold of. I will see what I can find and get back to you. Toni
My Great Grandmother ARAMINTA MABER and her husband were living at the CORNWALL HOTEL, Winnipeg in the 1890's. The family emigrated to Canada from England after 1891. I heard that the Cornwall Hotel was demolished but wonder if anyone knows anything about it or if there are any photographs of it. It is a coincidence that my Great Grandmother was born in Cornwall, England. Did it mean she started the Hotel and named it after the place of her birth ? Any help appreciated. Good morning- I'm new on the list, and starting to piece together more information on my HAYWARD family. I have pictures from the late 1800's of the family business, the Victoria Hotel in Winnipeg- the facade and the inside of the saloon/bar. (quite a bunch of tough looking characters, too) I'm so hoping to find someone who has heard of the establishment, or knows where I can go for more information. Thank you in advance! Mary Brockmeyer

I know of 4 relatives of mine, possibly 5, the SCHACKS, that are buried there, but I didn't realize until this list that Elmwood was in such bad shape. Since I live in South Dakota and don't have the means to travel to Elmwood in order to save it, does anyone know of any person or organization that is working to save Elmwood? What can I do to help? Thanks, Sue > >
Mc Millan is not close to the Elemwood Cem. The street you are looking for is on the other side of the river in Fort Rough It is the next street over from a well knowen area of Coffee shops and cheese cake places. Elemwood Cem is off of Henderson Hwy..the office is on Hespler. My father in law use to live on Mc millan he passed away about 4 years ago. He lived with a man and his wife in the upper floor of an old character 3 story home,,When the man died he gave the house to my father in law or sold it how ever the story went..just in case as you put it.......... the mans name before my father in law was ED._______ Yes Elmwood is in a sad state. And it's true about the graves at the side of the river. I have heard that some have been lost to the Red River but don't know if that is fact. The bugs well yes it's a good idea to put on bug spray. It's because you are in long uncut grass more then anything. Go early the bugs are less night time or at sun set..They come out. If it's a hot day they stay away until the cool Ev.... Take it from country folk smile. Toni
AmberSun2@aol.com wrote: > Just wondering how far Elmwood Cemetary is from Mc Millan Ave. My Great > Grandparents lived on Mc Millan and wondering if it is close, maybe they are Hello Catherine The Elmwood Cemetery is not very close to McMillan Avenue but there is the Waverley Cemetery that is within a couple of blocks of McMillan. The Address is 1501 Waverley Street, Winnipeg, R3T 0P7, 204 925-1120. Do you know when your g grandparents died? You might try contacting the Winnipeg Free Press if you knew they might be able to help you find an obituary for them. http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/ This is their online address, but I don't know if they do searches from there. Their telephone number is 204 - 697-7000. Good Luck in your search. Carol Lylyk Calgary, Alberta
