    1. [MBWINNIPEG-L] Canadians in the Anglo-Boer War
    2. WR Nelson
    3. I wonder whether anyone knows whether information is available about Canadian soldiers who went to South Africa to fight with the British in the Anglo-Boer War? I have a theory that at least one of my South African great-aunts may have married a Canadian soldier, and that that was how half my MATTHEWS family (my ggrandparents and 4 of their daughters) ended up in Canada. My great-grandparents went to Canada in 1915, both died in 1917 and are buried in the Old Kildonan churchyard, Winnipeg. I haven't yet found out where their daughters are buried, or even when they died. Any snippets of information could be helpful! Bev Nelson Christchurch New Zealand

    2. Jacquie nex
    3. Hello Everyone, I thought that I should let people know that I have E.S. Russenholt's book Six Thousand Canadian Men. It is the story of Winnipeg's 44th Battalion in World War One. There is a list of all those that served in the Battalion and gives regimental numbers. The book is not indexed so I can't tell you if he is mentioned in the book, but I can tell you regimental number, name and rank, original unit, disposition date and Theatre of Service. So if anyone suspects their family member served in the 44th give me a shout and I will see what I can find. Jacquie Nex jacnex@home.com

    3. Hi Karen Thanks very much for the information. I have a map of Winnipeg and can see Provencher Street. I will also contact the MGS for the burial information. Thank you again. John -----Original Message----- From: Stine [mailto:sstine@escape.ca] Sent: March 8, 2000 7:31 PM To: CAN-MB-WINNIPEG-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MBWINNIPEG-L] Winnipeg Info Hello John, The Belgian Club is at 407 Provencher in St. Boniface and their telephone number is 1-204-237-4263 and yes it does still exist. I can find no listing for the Home Street United Church in the current telephone book. In the 1966 Henderson's Directory it is located at 318 Home Street. For the place of burial either send for her death certificate or go to the Manitoba Genealogical Society at 1045 St. James Street. For a $5.00 you can search the MGS cemetery transcriptions yourself for her or you can mail them $6.00 along with a SASE and they will search for you. The MGS is the best place to find your answers and they are very helpful and the parking is free. They do have a web site so look at that. One more thing. The snow is gone now. I am going to Winnipeg on a sort of a pilgrimage in April. My family was from Winnipeg. 1 - I know my grandparents were married at the Home Street United Church in 1926. Does this church still exist? I'd like to see it. 2 - My grandfather belonged to the Belgium Club in St-Boniface - does it still exist? 3 - My grandfather's sister drowned in the Red River around 1924-26. Her name was Hortense Harris, née Damhaut, wife of Fred Harris. How can I find out where she is buried? 4 - Will the snow be gone by mid-April? I appreciate all suggestions.
