Good day list Is there SKS on the list that could look up a marriage record for me? I'm looking for the marriage between a Henry John GILLIS and Anna STANDRYCK (Ukrainian descent). Apparently they were married March 23, 1900 at 323 Bannatyne St. in Winnipeg, yet apparently that address was for store. Harry was either listed as Methodist or Episcopalian and was not found on the 1901 Winnipeg census. One problem is that Henry went by the names Harry John and Harry Jack. According to information obtained from his children's birth records, he could have been born in about 4-5 different places in Ontario from 1870 to 1874. His date of marriage, as per these documents, has ranged from 1900 to 1904, although his first child was born in 1901. His parents names are at this point unknown. On Harry's obit Anna's surname was given as STANDWICK. His obit also states that he was a member of the Winnipeg police for about 10 years, although when the police museum was contacted, they had no reference to him. Harry and Anna moved to the Dauphin district circ 1911. Bullmore's funeral home was in charge of the funeral arrangements but I have been unable to find them to see what other information they may have. We have possibly located Harry with a family living in Forest, Lambton Co., Ontario but in this instance he was going by the name Henry John. All clues seem to suggest that this may be the right family, except for the name reversal. I know that often "given" names were a reversal of what names the person actually used through his/her life. Locating their marriage record is the only way left to us to confirm if we have the right parents for Harry. Any help at all would be sincerely appreciated. Patricia Ottawa, Ontario

Hi everyone I am hoping that if anyone has a chance to visit the Pilot Mound Cemetery they would be so kind as to check the wording on the headstone of plot #88 My G.Aunt Emily Lumbers is buried there. She died in 1945 in Glenora and I do not know the actual date of the month and day or any other writing on the headstone. I would be most obliged to anyone who could check this for me. Best wishes June.

I have discovered that I have been pursuing a false trail for the last year. I was trying to find out something of the fortunes of two of my grandfather's brothers, Walter and Joseph THOMSON/THOMPSON, who settled in Canada in the early 1900s. Both married in Canada and served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Based on information from the daughter of one of the relatives I hoped to learn more of, I concentrated my enquiries on Winnipeg. After all, one would expect this family source to be accurate wouldn't one? I had of course ignored one of the first rules of genealogy and, in so doing, wasted a lot of time! I knew from military records that they served in Saskatchewan regiments but assumed that they had popped over the border to enlist. Now that I have obtained their military records, I discover that they had Saskatchewan addresses at the time and Walter's widow was still in the area when her war pension was granted. I shall now try to trace family in that state. No wonder that I got no response from Winnipeg even though I had details of Walter's daughter and grand-daughter! At least I think I have these details ----they were from the same source! The Winnipeg connection was that Joseph's son was cared for by an aunt, his mother having died just before Joseph enlisted in 1916. This aunt lived in Emerson, Manitoba. I know that this son , Wilfred/Wilford Thomson has now died but he has family who probably still live in Manitoba, but not necessarily in Winnipeg. I send this message to underline the maxim of not relying on the memory of living relatives, no matter how close, kinship-wise if not geograhically! Audrey Chessman, England

Hello All I am new to this list but have been researching in the UK for a couple of years. Courtesy of the UK 1901 census (at last) I have confirmed the names of ancestors who emigrated to Canada. The family are George KING, his wife Mary E. KING and at 2 daughters Grace KING and IVY King. I have old photos of the girls taken around 1911 by a photographer in Winnipeg. I have confirmed that they were still inthe UK (Kent) in 1901 so they must have travelled to Canada sometime in between. If anyone has links with this family I would love to hear from them, also I'm completely new to researching in Canada so any useful websites or info would be greatly appreciated. Regards Debbie Wild Hampshire UK
