FYI: Hi, I found this at National Archives...for those of you who think that all Canadian Censuses were enumerated on Mar 31st or Apr 1st, think again!!! These are the dates that people are told to give their age in reference to regardless of when they were actually asked the question. The question for most seems to be posed like this..."How old will you be on April 4, 1881?"...even though they may have been 62 on April 5th and they responded on May 1st, they are supposed to respond 61 since that is how old they were on April 4th. ***************Dates of Census enumerations**************** In most cases, the following list indicates the official enumeration dates for the various census returns. The actual enumeration of the population took weeks or months. Enumerators were instructed to record the information on the census returns as it existed on the official enumeration date. 1825 — Lower Canada (Quebec) taken from 20 June to 20 September 1825 1831 — Lower Canada (Quebec) taken from 1 June to 1 October 1831 1842 — Canada West (Ontario) returns were supposed to be completed by 1 February 1842 1851 — 12 January 1852 (delays led to the late enumeration of the 1851 census) 1861 — 14 January 1861 1871 — 2 April 1871 1881 — 4 April 1881 1891 — 6 April 1891 1901 — 31 March 1901 *********************************************************** Donna Alden-Bugden WinnipegEmerg*REMOVE*@hotmail.com Remove the *REMOVE* part before e-mailing me Emergency Nurse ************************************************************

When sending your requests to the Manitoba government, please do not "advise the genealogical public through: [email protected] and [email protected]" These Mailing Lists are provided by RootsWeb for genealogical and historical research for those specific areas. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/CAN/CAN-MANITOBA.html and http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/CAN/CAN-MB-WINNIPEG.html I would suggest asking RootsWeb for a mailing list for this MB Vital Statistics Index project. I don't think the government could reply to such a list since they would have to subscribe to the list. (2)- Winnipeg Centennial Library for Winnipeg City Directories - some on microfilm from 1800's to 2000 (stopped publishing). These early directories also contain some rural centres as well. (3)- This library also has on microfilm very early editions of The Manitoba Free Press which became the Winnipeg Free Press (for obits) Hope this helps Dick.. ---- Original Message ----- From: "Donna Alden-Bugden" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 24, 2002 12:15 PM Subject: [MBWINNIPEG-L] Winnipeg Family History Centre? > Hello, > > I'm moving to Winnipeg soon and I would like to know where I can do Family > History Research. There is a Family History Centre in Winnipeg. It is located at 45 Dalhousie Drive in Fort Garry, near the University of Manitoba. The telephone number is 261-4271. They have fairly limited hours, although last time I checked they were open a couple of evenings a week. I would recommend calling them directly for hours of opening. Hi, As I understand it, the Civil Registration records of Manitoba are at the Vital Statistics office, Portage Avenue Winnipeg. As I live in the UK and do not have an accurate date of death, I am not able to order a certificate direct. Is there anyone on the list who visits the Vital Statistics office and would be prepared to try to find a death entry for me? Date of death would probably be sometime between 1952 and 1967 (making age at death 65-80 years old). The surname is not common - JUBB, so there certainly won't be many entries. I should willingly re-reimburse expenses or carry out some reciprocal work in the UK as payment. Alternatively, can anyone let me have names of any researchers who would do this work for me? Many thanks Maureen Mitchell A Yorkshire Tyke laikin' i' Norfolk (UK) I use Archive CD Books for my research - old books for Genealogists (on CD) http://www.archivecdbooks.org Guild of One-Name Studies 3381 Researching JUBB & VICKERMAN
Dear All Our family are starting a search for the families of Harry Dennis PENNICARD and Edith Avis PATTENDEN who emigrated to the Winnipeg area, from Edenbridge in Kent, in the early 1900s. If anyone should recognise these names we would love to hear from you. We are also searching for the family Tom BAKER from Edenbridge in Kent. He was half brother to our Grandfather Henry James PATTENDEN. We understand someone came searching in Kent some years back but we are all out of the home area. Help please! Evelyn Jenner

Your Honourable Premier Doer, On behalf of the genealogical public I ask that you consummate the changes to the Vital Statistics Act as proposed by his Honourable Ron LEMIEUX as outlined in his News Release dated December 12, 2000 or make any changes that would give equal access to historical Vital Statistic records as is available in British Columbia through the BC Archives. http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm#indexes and advise the genealogical public through: [email protected] and [email protected] of any action taken by your government in this matter. In January 2002 I wrote to his Honourable Scott Smith regarding proposed changes to the MB Vital Statistic Act that the genealogical public were and are anxiously awaiting for (see following). Many people from all over the world are searching their roots and access to historical records such as Births, Deaths and Marriages is important to their research. Here in BC we can search an index at BC Archives for deaths over 20 years old, marriages over 75 years old and births over 100 years old. The actual transcription of the event registration is available (for a cost if ordered on the internet) at the BC Archives (an excellent revenue generation idea) and also available to researchers on microfilm at major libraries in BC. We hope that you will take care of this important step in furthering Manitoba's global excellence in our new Millennium and please keep us researchers informed of your progress. I am a subscriber to MB News Releases...and my roots are in MB. I thank you for your attention.
