Hi, Wondering if anyone with access to Vesturfaraskra would mind looking up a relative of mine who (according to the Census Records) immigrated to Manitoba from Iceland in 1876 (or thereabouts). Name is Valgerdur Jonsdottir (or Jonsson), born Aug. 24, 1841 in Reynivallir, Kjosarsysla, Iceland. Married name was Hjaltested (or Halstead), but in 1876, she would have been a widow travelling with her three daughters, Annie (Gurdridur, born 1867), Rosa (born 1869), and Gertrude (Gudrun, born 1871) . She married William McCarthy in Winnipeg’s Holy Trinity Anglican Church in 1877 and by 1881 was in Rainy River (Kenora) Ontario. Thanks. Hello List, I would like to thank the 3 individuals who responded to my plea of help in finding the above’s Obit. I now have it, my friend will be over the moon and I can only say again THANK YOU. Cheers, Bridget in B.C.
Bridget: The Provincial Archives of Manitoba have newspapers and will do some research for you. I do not know if there are costs associated or how it works but here is a link: http://www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/research.html Also on Find a Grave website there is a memorial set up for him but unfortunately no photo of the grave marker and less information than you already have. Sorry I don't live in Winnipeg so cannot offer to help. In the past, I have found some success in attending at the Winnipeg Centennial Library, Archives Section. They have the newspapers on micro-fiche. It is possible you might find the obit there. I would volunteer myself but my age and health keep me at home. Good hunting. hello Listers: I've joined this list in the hope of finding a WW1 Nurse, Margaret Morrison Ross. I have followed her through the war. On the 1921 census she is still nursing at Winnipeg, but at which hospital is unknown. I have tried to find her in online newspapers, cemetery lists, etc., but to no avail. Is there anyone on the list who might be able to help me find her death date and or burial place? She was born in 1868 so likely died in the late 1940's or early 1950's. Any help would be appreciated. Sher Leetooze Bowmanville, Ontario.
Hello Thank you all once again for all these leads and sites. I have now narrowed down most of my CARUK family but it looks like I will have to give up on correcting the Marriage date which is really too bad for other researchers. One site, it said "Ask a Librarian" and below is the nice reply I just received. At least this will be in the list Archives should anyone else be questioning it and no way I am going to pay to fix a bad transcription. Will add a note to this couples file and change the year to 1906. I am now down to finding one last family in 1916 as I have Caruk daughter and her married was ZACHIDNIAK and found her under Zodedwok, another under Zakedrick and also Zakednek. ============================================ Manitoba Vital Statistics Agency is the only official place where you can get errors corrected. I've attached a link to the page which shows that correcting someone else's errors if not free! http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/FeesandServices.html I have had personal experience with them in trying to correct typos. It's not easy and you need to provide original documentation. Good luck Reference Services Manitoba Legislative Library Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 1T5 ============================================= Thank you Margaret for these sites as I have used them often now. It was from the vitalstats site I found this "ask the Librarian" and the automated genealogy site I was able to locate the Zachidniak couple. Hi Karen Thank you for this website and I am now waiting for a reply. There is no way this man could have married Nov 5, 1905 and I do believe the transcriber used the "5" in the day and put the same number for the year in error. The ship list is quite clear that he arrived on April 15, 1906 and the 1906 census date was quite clear that Nykyfor was with his parents and listed as single on June 29, 1906. Should I ever get this reviewed and corrected will let all know. Hi Marg Thank You, I did have a look but a bit more present day people than I know. Something I have found handy is to search under a name. I enter into Google such as Mary Smith obituary Winnipeg, Manitoba - have been able to download some good ones and from there been able to pick out other family info also. Hi Spencer Yes, I always make corrections but guess that is the Banker in me as I must keep the books straight. Thanks for letting us know about the 1921 census as sure did not expect that as yet. I do not know about others in Ottawa and getting to the National Library but I find the parking is limited and the time allowed in parking is only 2 hours. Maybe this summer will have to take the bus there for a full day. I am now back prowling the 1916 census and will correct any I do find. <g> Lorraine On 13/03/2013 4:45 PM, Spencer Field wrote: > Congratulations Lorraine. Parkland Regional Library. Home. 504 Main Street North Dauphin MB R7N 1C9. 204-638-6410 204-638-9483 Fax prlhq@parklandlib.mb.ca They may have a History Book for the area that you are looking for. The Prairie provinces have some excellent history books done about 1972 or 1980 and updated recently. The libray will know about them and send you copies of the pages that you are looking for. http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SurnameSearch.jsp?surname=caruk&provi nce=Manitoba&description=Surname+search+in+1911+Census+of+Canada+in+province +of+Manitoba I suspect that the name is misspelled and there is a soundex in this census but i didn't see any in the 1906 either. Do you have ancestry.com or ca? They have a two week trial that you might find something in. Caruk is in the Canada Voter's List in there. and the 1916 census shows the families. There are other people who have the Paul Caruk family tree on there. One has a picture but it is a private tree but you could contact them. I do hope you find a family writeup in the Dauphin history book or they may even be a history book for Engelbert at the Dauphin library. This CARUK family I am following arrived in Manitoba in 1903 and I do have many of them on the ship list. One of the sons was serving in the Austrian Military and could not come at that time with the family. Things I have read about them say this other son arrived in 1905 and the Manitoba Vital Statistics have him as getting married Nov. 5, 1905. Last night I prowled the ship lists looking for him and found he did not leave for Canada until March 22, 1906 so how could he have married in Manitoba in 1905. The 1906 is quite clear on the ship list so I emailed the Manitoba Vital Statistics to ask if someone would recheck the date on the marriage but they do not do that. I find the Manitoba registrations very expensive and would like to ask if anyone knows of another way to check this marriage date. The marriage is for Niscphorus (Nykyfor) Caruk and Anna Burtnyk in Ethelbert, Manitoba on Nov. 5, 1905. Any other ideas of how to recheck this year would be appreciated. They are knowledgeable and have been helpful to me in the past. I have included the link to their website. http://www.mhs.mb.ca/ Karen Prytula Ottawa On Tue, Mar 12, 2013 at 1:45 PM, Lorraine Satchell <espencer@magma.ca>wrote: > Hi Spencer > > Thank You for the encouragement as I do feel some of this family should > show > on the 1906. Yes, I have finally found this family on the 1906 census and of all things the name was spelled SHAROOK and both pages were done by the same census taker, George Sloan. Have put in quite a few name corrections as some of the 1st names were spelled incorrectly also. This census was dated July 4, 1906 and the son that I have found the marriage year incorrect on is living at home and noted as single and the Manitoba V. S site says he married Nov. 5, 1905 but I am now quite sure it was Nov. 5, 1906. I have learned a lot for places to look from all of you. Help was sure appreciated. And pleased to see you are noting corrections where the next person can get the correct info with ease. I should do that a lot more. I have heard the 1921 Canada wide census is to be transferred from Statistics Canada?? to Library and Archives Canada?? on June 1, 2013 and to be released to the public on June 13, 2013. Then we can begin the next big search. Spencer Field Hello I do want to "Thank" all of you on this list that have been so helpful.
