    3. Dear Subscribers/Genealogy Authorities, In the mid-1800's, did most of the Irish immigrants settle in specific areas within the city of Winnipeg or surrounding region or did most just settle randomly within these areas at that time? David F.

    3. Hello David, I borrowed this from: http://winnipeg.about.com/aboutcanada/winnipeg/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=h ttp%3A%2F%2Fwinnipeg411.com%2Fhistory%2Findepth%2F The expansion of the province coincided with the growth of Winnipeg. The assurance of a railroad and forthcoming CPR jobs created a boom that led to the city's population reaching 14,000. At some points in 1882, land in Winnipeg was more expensive than lots in Chicago or New York City. During this boom, the first telephones were installed downtown and a horse-drawn street railway was created. But the boom soon ended, leading to the failure of over 100 businesses. Winnipeg's economy survived the crash, and continued to prosper. Soon the city was filled with immigrants from all over Europe. But the city was divided; the railroad crossed the river at Point Douglas, cutting Winnipeg in two. The southern part was home to many of the Ontarian and British settlers, while the North End was home to most of the other peoples, such as Poles, Ukrainians, and Jews. My Irish grandfather settled in the St. James area. Hope this is helpful!
