    3. hello all I am hoping someone out there can answer this query for me . When my gr.father came to Canada from England in 1884 he landed in Ontario and then on to Manitoba. I have been told that when he came to Man. it was not by land (as I had assumed) but by "small boat". ) any ideas on what route they may have taken? thanks for any and all ideas.Judith researching LEECH/WARDLE

    3. Hi Judith, It would probably be easier to find, if you knew the destination. Fort Garry? or York Factory? or ???? and his occupation when he arrived here. Waterways were the way to travel in the early 1800's, and there is a route map@ http://www.civilization.ca/membrs/canhist/canoe/can34pho.html This was the route taken by Sir George and Lady Frances Simpson., but as you can see, by the map, he travelled all over Western Canada. I vaguely remember learning somewhere that she brought her piano by canoe to Lower Fort Garry. Another travel route was from Moose Factory via James Bay to York Factory on Hudson's Bay. The Provincial Archives have a huge section on the Hudson's Bay Company and it is at: http://www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/genealogy/gen_text/hbca_fur1892_1987.html These dates may be a bit early, but then one, after travelling on a ship from England,can only imagine that any boat would be small to our ancestors.
