    3. Hi Alan - I agree it would be very nice not to have to pay, but with Manitoba you get a photocopy of the original record and those I have received are always good and readable copies. I have not had dealings with B.C. although I believed that there was a charge there as well beyond the information published. I found I could only go so far with either if I wanted to verify names of parents, spouses on death records, or look for parent names on marriage registrations etc. I don't know what the charge would be, or if one could go directly to Vital Statistics and do your own search. I wonder if they would not charge for the photocopy anyway. 3. If you go to the BC Archives in Victoria, BC., and have the info, you can look up the BMD's, and pay only 50 cents for the photocopy....If you send it to the Archives via credit card online, it costs about $12.00 plus tax.. I wonder if you can do the same thing at the Manitoba Archives, go in and read the film and then get a photocopy cheaper?...

    3. On the Manitoba Vitals site, on Birth records, if you look at the "Detail View", you will see the name of the mother. That helps, a lot. I just wish the births were released before 100 years. Bill S ===== Lynton (Bill) Stewart Metis, Scots and English Ancestry, Loyalist and Patriot, USA and Canadian. Without them, I wouldn't be here. .

    3. Freda and other listers - there are 2 ways of getting a bmd from BC. The first one is you order it directly from the Archives, and it costs I think about 50 buckaroos (or maybe it's only 20 - did I say only?), at any rate too much. The second route is to put your request on the BC List. Several times a year I do free lookups at Cloverdale library for people who are too distant from a genealogical library in BC. There are other listers in BC who do the same. The listers will get it either for Free, or only charge you the 50 cents for the copying fee at the library and the postage. I don't think you can beat that. The important thing to remember is that you order a REGISTRATION...NOT A "CERTIFICATE". A certificate can only be purchased from the Archives and is just verification of the bmd, with not a lot of info. The registration is the long form giving a lot of information usually, dependent upon the knowledge of the informant (ie spouse, parent, brother etc.) So yes, we have to pay everywhere in Canada, but there is no point in paying more than you absolutely have to. Personally, I was pleased when the Manitoba Index became available, even with it's restrictions. It would be very nice if the same thing were available in all the other provinces....let's just hope that 1911 census gets released - right??!! 3. You might also try a group called Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness, which is a group of volunteers from around the world that could research such information. The details of that group are at www.raogk.org -----Original Message----- From: April Bell [mailto:abellraven@telus.net] Sent: Saturday, April 10, 2004 4:24 PM To: CAN-MANITOBA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CAN-Manitoba] Advice need re: Vital Statistics Freda and other listers - there are 2 ways of getting a bmd from BC.
