    1. [CAN-Manitoba] My missing Gt Grandfather/using provincial newspapers, etc.
    2. Ann McClean
    3. This is a reply to everyone who was good enough to respond to my original posting regarding contacting a provincial newspaper in an effort to trace possible descendants of my runaway Gt Grandfather, WALTER SCOTT. He was born 6 October 1867 in Christchurch, Upwell, Isle of Ely - now North Cambridgeshire. He has no middle name. His parents were John & Hannah Scott, of Christchurch. (I have just received a copy of his birth certificate from the GRO.) The SCOTTs were then, and still are, wealthy farmers. They were also, and still are, staunch Methodists. When Walter did his "runner" to Canada, he was accompanied by the local school mistress - I have yet to find out her name; I hope to be able to do this next time I visit the CRO in Cambridge - but that won't be until next year now. It should certainly be on the U.K. 1901 Census due for release Jan. 2002 (and also on the Canadian 1911 Census!) They left U.K. in about 1905 - but from where, I don't know. This is all the information I have, as Walter is still a VERY touchy subject in my father's family and I only found out about him back in March when I realised there was no headstone for him in the village Churchyard where the rest of his family lie. I have tried all the Canadian GenWeb sites and various other recommended listings but to no avail - hence my posting re: writing to a provincial newspaper. I have been on the Provincial Canadian lists since the Spring and culled a lot of knowledge regarding Land Grants, Ship's Passenger lists, etc, but untill I can find out exactly when he left England and where he settled in Canada, I'm knocking my head against the proverbial brick wall! Once the 1911 Candian Census is released, I may stand a chance of finding him, but until then, I'm clutching at straws. But my father, aged 76, (after a life threatening spell in hospital) is now extremely keen to find out what happened to his never-known Grandfather, so I am exploring all angles in the quest for the elusive Walter!
