Hello Listers, I am looking for a family who lived in the Elmwood area from 1905 on. There were eventually five brothers from this family, who came from Smarden, Kent, who settled in the Elmwood/East Kildonan area of Winnipeg. Charles Batt married Julia Ann Shaw (nee Hawley) who had married several times. It is said that Julia had several children herself but that she and Charles Batt adopted several more. Charles worked for J.Y. Griffin, later Swift's Meat Packers, for most of his working life and died in 1951. Julia had died in 1943. They are interred in Elmwood Cemetery. Stanley Batt married Mary Elizabeth Bullen (known as "Polly" to her family). They married in England before coming to Manitoba in 1905, and had a daughter Mary early in 1906. Stanley became a Grocer and had a store at 393 Henderson Highway, where the family also lived, right up to the 1950's. They had several more children: Eugenie, Grace, Jean, Margaret, Stanley Jr. and Wallace. A younger brother of Charles and Stanley, Wallace Batt, died in 1909, at the age of 24. Two other brother, Ashley and Raymond, also came to Manitoba. Stanley's wife, Mary Elizabeth "Polly" was related to my family and I would be delighted to hear from anyone with further information of the family and their descendants. TIA Janice Jones Winnipeg
