Dear Listers If anyone has the above named book, could you please check it for me. I believe there is a James MCRAE mentioned. I am wondering if he is my great grandfather. My great grandfather was born about 1848 and was married to Jane. His children were: James "Jack", born about1873 Grace Archibald Maggie Jessie Flora If this appears to be the same person mentioned in the book, I would be interested in photocopies or scanned images of the pages. I am also interested in William Carruthers and Steven Carruthers, but I don't believe they were mentioned in the book. I am in B.C.. I tried to borrow the book from a Winnipeg library through an interlibrary loan, but it is not forthcoming. I believe it is a reference book and they won't release it. Thank you. Hi Yes, the book "Pioneers of Grandview and District" does list a McRAE family. I have a copy of it. Names and dates match your note quite well. I "suspect" it is the same family. The McRAE family article is a little larger than a full page, spread across pages 170 and 171. It was written by Archie McRAE, a son of James. Appears the book was printed in 1976. The article states, in part, that James was born in Lanark Cty., Ontario in February 1848, and in "early manhood" moved to Bruce Cty., Ontario. There he married Jane STEVEN (born Dec. 1847 in Stormont Cty., Ontario) in Feb., 1872 in Walkerton. They moved to Wisconsin in 1881, and Minnesota in 1883, and in 1886 moved to Manitoba (Virden and Hamiota). The article provides some details on children, birth places (no dates) and spouses (names only), and well as a few death dates, a few residences of some children. I see nothing on any grandchildren. The rest of the article appears to describe some experiences living in the area in early 1900's -- as does most of the articles in the book. The book is NOT indexed, so very difficult to find if the family is mentioned elsewhere. A through read of the whole book would probably shed some light on the families of the spouses of James children. How to get the book? I suggest looking for an Interlibrary Loan thru the Grandview area Library, or perhaps a library at a University. For example the University of Alberta has an extensive local history section (of many parts of Canada) in one of their libraries. When I visited Grandview, about 2 years ago, the book was readily available to purchase at the Grandview town hall (or perhaps the visitors information centre?). My scanner is not working right now. First things first -- does this look like the right family? Perhaps someone else can get an image to you before I can. Finally, the article closes with a brief paragraph on the children and where they moved to. The last sentence states "my sister Jennie and I now reside in Grandview" ... Looks like all the other children died (between 1938 and 1960). Perhaps a direct contact with McRAE's still in the area (if there are any) will bear fruit. Hope this helps.
