    1. [CAN-Manitoba] RE: I've seen the Homestead documents... now what does it mean?

    3. Dear Alan and list folk, Thank you for sending along the telephone number... it has changed slightly but only because of the new addition to the area codes... The number for the Alberta Provincial Archives is now (780) 427-1750. The librarian was of great help and was able to take the required information over the telephone and my credit card number for the order. The cost was $20.00 Canadian plus $3.00 shipping and handling all of course with GST. When they reach my order (they have a little bit of a back-log) a research librarian will contact me to tell me of the information she has found. From what I was told it should be a minimum of four pages but could be as many as ten. At this point I was told to mention the fact that it was a female who obtained the homesteader land... apparently this is quite unusual unless the female is a widow... which she wasn't as she was listed as Annie Tremblay the wife of Maurice Tremblay (who was alive and well). The research librarian can then do further searches if I so request at the cost of $30.00 per hour in order to attempt to find out why my great grandmother would be the named homesteader while her husband was alive and well. By rights he should have been the homesteader as he was the Canadian citizen and she was American, apparently homesteader grants were only given to British Subjects, which doesn't include American citizens. Thank you again for the information you supplied. I really appreciate all the help that I have gotten from you and other list members. Have a wonderful week and good luck in your searches. Deborah; You have all of the key information that you need. SE 1/4 Section 30, Township 55 Range 22 West of the Fourth Meridian. You could check with the Provincial Archives in Alberta 12845 -102nd Avenue Edmonton Alberta T5N 0M6 telephone (403) 427-1750 or check to see if they have a website. The big issue is to find the correct provincial archives to contact. I took the address from Angus Baxter's book, In search of your Canadian Roots so it might be out of date. I have had excellent luck in getting homestead records from Saskatchewan. In fact, some with break through information! Alan DW wrote: > Hello everyone, > > I have a big favour to ask of you....
