    1. Re: [CAN-Manitoba] CHURCH OR CEMETERY AT LAKE WINNIPEG?

    3. Hi, Viola....have you checked with the Hudson's Bay Company Archives regarding Duncan? Their website is www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/hbca They will do a search of their records providing you give them all relevant information as to dates and locations, etc. If your Duncan was a HBC employee and had shares in the Company, this would definitely be recorded in the archives in Canada and also at the head office in London. As Victoria mentioned, Lake Winnipeg is a huge body of water. Finding someone who lived at Lake Winnipeg or a cemetery would be like trying to find someone who lived beside Lake Superior. Without specific information it would be nearly impossible to find. There are indeed several First Nations around the lake, and there were several trading posts throughout the years, not only The Hudson's Bay Company, but the Northwest Company as well as several independent traders such as Revillon Freres. Remember we're talking about at least a two hundred year period of heavy trading. The best way to find out about Duncan would be to access the HBC archives and first find where he was posted and then go from there. The fort(s) where he was posted may likely not be there anymore, but the HBC kept fairly good records in the post journals. The more you know about his connection with the Company, the more likely you are to find out about where he lived, etc. If you send an inquiry to the archives, the waiting time is roughly 6 to 8 weeks due to the volume, but the database is usually researched thoroughly. At the National Archives of Canada Dept. of the Interior (Metis Scrip references RG-15) http://www.archives.ca/exec/naweb.dll?fs&02010502&e&top&0 , there are several references to Duncan McDougall in Red River, and several for Catherine at Lac La Biche, Alberta, with connections to Raphael Tremblay, as I recall this was a name you were researching in another list we both subscribe to. As a note, St. James was an English Halfbreed (Metis) parish in the Red River Settlement now known as Winnipeg). It is now a part of west central area of the city. Back then this would have been roughly a day's travel from the south end of Lake Winnipeg.
