Could anyone tell me what newspapers would have carried local news of the Hanover area in 1937? Also I'd like to know what newspapers would have served the Elm River area around 1902. Thanks....Peter Willcock

Hello list, I have joined this list to try to find out something about the death of Herman L PORTER and his wife in 1935. HLP was working at Brandon College when he and his family were drowned in a boating accident on the 19th June. During the first world war HLP was with the 126th Company of the Canadian Forestry Corps based in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, England. The Corps was cutting timber from the Duke of Bedford's Estate for use in the trenches in France. At that time HLP was a Sergeant with the Canadian YMCA. He achieved a BA from Acadia University in 1917. Brandon College provided me with the date of the tragedy but no details. I am researching this event on behalf of the Ampthill & District Archaeological & Local History Society. The Society is looking into the work of the Forestry Corps in and around Ampthill. I would be very grateful if somebody could help or suggest a way of filling in the details of this unfortunate incident. Best regards, Peter Wood Flitwick, Bedfordshire England

Hello List, I have on loan from the library a book called "They Shall Not Grow Old, A Book of Remembrance" written by Les Allison and Harry Hayward. ISBN 0-920436-41-2. It has a list of those killed in action during World War II and also a list of the prisoners of war. Many are from Manitoba. There are over 18,000 biographies of the soldiers who took part in the air war from 1939-1945. This book only covers the RCAF which is the Royal Canadian Air Force. I am willing to do lookups from this book while I have it on loan. Hello Everyone: For those of you who have a deep interest in how, when and where your Surnames were formed I would like to direct you to 5 new pages we have recently added to our web site. Many researchers have for years believed that all ancestors with the same Surname were at some point related. That is simply not true. When you get back to proving your pre 1500s ancestors you will discover that there are in fact many Surnames that have passed through many families that have no relationship whatsoever. The 5 pages mentioned also contain information on many Forenames and their creation and some of the pages are large so relax and take your time. THE ORIGIN OF THE SURNAME PART 1 THE ORIGIN OF THE SURNAME PART 2 THE ORIGIN OF THE FORENAME FORENAMES OF WOMEN AND THEIR SIGNIFICANCE FORENAMES OF MEN AND THEIR SIGNIFICANCE .......................................................................... There is much information here that should be of interest to all. Go to our web site at: http://www.linkline.com/personal/xymox/ Once there enter the link titled "ORIGIN OF SURNAMES & FORENAMES" this will take you to the index for the 5 pages. For those of you who are AOL members you may have trouble connecting to many pages that may come up with a message such as "Page Does Not Exist" and you can cure that by using your browser feature of Copy and Paste the URL to your browser and then enter from there. All pages contained within our web pages are free for viewing and study by all interested researchers. The very best to you all. Enjoy. Harold Oliver Director America's First Families
