Hello Listers, I am looking for a family who lived in the Elmwood area from 1905 on. There were eventually five brothers from this family, who came from Smarden, Kent, who settled in the Elmwood/East Kildonan area of Winnipeg. Charles Batt married Julia Ann Shaw (nee Hawley) who had married several times. It is said that Julia had several children herself but that she and Charles Batt adopted several more. Charles worked for J.Y. Griffin, later Swift's Meat Packers, for most of his working life and died in 1951. Julia had died in 1943. They are interred in Elmwood Cemetery. Stanley Batt married Mary Elizabeth Bullen (known as "Polly" to her family). They married in England before coming to Manitoba in 1905, and had a daughter Mary early in 1906. Stanley became a Grocer and had a store at 393 Henderson Highway, where the family also lived, right up to the 1950's. They had several more children: Eugenie, Grace, Jean, Margaret, Stanley Jr. and Wallace. A younger brother of Charles and Stanley, Wallace Batt, died in 1909, at the age of 24. Two other brother, Ashley and Raymond, also came to Manitoba. Stanley's wife, Mary Elizabeth "Polly" was related to my family and I would be delighted to hear from anyone with further information of the family and their descendants. TIA Janice Jones Winnipeg

Funeral services were held Friday at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart church at Olga for Hyacinthe Villeneuve, 87 years old, one of the northeastern North Dakota's oldest pioneers. He died Wednesday following a stroke suffered three weeks ago. The services were in charge of Rev L.A. C Ducharme and burial was in the Olga cemetery beside the reamins of Mrs Villeneuve. Mr. Villeneuve had been a resident of North Dakota since 1852, living first in Pembina county and moving to Cavalier county in 1895. He was born at Peace River Alta. the son of Frank and Eliza Villeneuve, Nov 10, 1846. His mother died when he was four years old and two years later he came with his father and other member of the family to Pembina after having lived a short time at Grand Prairie and Ste.Saulte Marie. In Pembina he was adopted by Mr and Mrs. Charles Bottineau, pioneer Pembina county couple. He returned to Canada in 1870 and at St. Norbert Man, married Pauline Laurence, and the couple came to Neche where they farmed. The Bottineau family moved west and settled in the new territory which later was organized as Bottineau county. The Villeneuves moved to the Rush Lake vicinity in 1895 and filed on a homestead before the railroad was built through that territory. They later moved to a claim 15 miles west of Langdon where they lived for four years and later moved to a farm in the Beaulieu district. Mrs Villeneuve died in 1911 and Mr. Villeneuve lived with his children there until coming to Langdon last fall to live with his son and DIL, Mr and Mrs John Villeneuve. Hi Folks: I have recently located a 1928 obit which mentions Mrs. David HUTCHINSON of Two Creeks, Manitoba. She was Harriett Ann MARTIN, b. Feb. 1878, Melancthon Twp. Ontario. Daughter of David Martin and Jane Bickel of Shelburne, Melancthon Twp. Dufferin County, Ontario. Another daughter mentioned is Mrs. Joseph BEATTY/BEATTIE of Brandon, Man. formerly Elizabeth MARTIN, b. 1873 Melancthon Twp. Ontario. Anyone familiar with either of these families? Norma, Ont.
The Manitoba Vital Statistics Act specifies that the Vital Statistics for the following are available for searching in the database: Births more than 100 years ago Marriages more than 80 years ago Deaths more than 70 years ago Any that are more recent are not: you have to write to them for the certificates and will get the certificate only if you qualify. So, if you are looking for a birth in 1904, you are out of luck until next year. Having said all that, I imagine they are not as quick adding information to their database as they might be, probably due to budget cutbacks. Mary Anne Ottawa
I'm trying to identify the dates the railway was pushed through from Winnipeg to Grosse Isle, to Ekhart, to Argyle, to Woodroyd, to Erinview, to Inwood, and to Sandridge and what the difference was between the Canadian Northern Western Railway and the Canadian Northern Railway. (and, if you know anything about the amount of wood & water required, sure would help) Thanks Earl

Hello All: My first posting on this list. Is this the right list for Provencher, Franklin, Manitoba? Thanks, Bonnie
Bonnie: I have family from Franklin. What family line is yours? Lynton (Bill) Stewart Metis, Scots and English Ancestry, Loyalist and Patriot, US and Canadian. Without all of them, I wouldn't be here.
Hello list, My name is debi, I live in BC. I am wondering if anyone on the list may have a local history book for 'Alexander Manitoba'. I'm researching the death of 'Charles William Ford' who died 1959 in Vancouver BC. His wife was Elsie JEHNS and we are hoping for a mention of the JEHNS family in Alexander. We know that Elsie was born in MB abt. 1925. Her father and mother were Emil Jehnns born Poland, and Emily Schultz, born Poland. I had previously had someone look for Charles FORD and I know there was no mention of him in the book but our Charles was in Alexander during the 1940 war registration. We are looking for a link between him and Elsie JEHNS to help determine if the death registration we have for Mr. FORD is in fact the right 'Mr. FORD'. If Elsie JEHNS or her parents were in Alexander this would at least be something for us. I hope this doesn't sound too confusing - Thank you very much for your time..............debi
Researching MATTICE: (a descendant of William Mattice): Looking for information about Mary Elizabeth Mattice married in March 1899 to Herbert Elm SMYTH, and their family. She died February 1952. Margaret Close Clause of Haldimand County, Ontario mclause11@sympatico.ca
Researching MATTICE (a descendant of William Mattice): Looking for information about Mary Jane Mattice & William Jacob SMYTH, and their family. She died 1929 in Oak Rivers, Manitoba. Margaret Close Clause of Haldimand County, Ontario mclause11@sympatico.ca
For those of us in Ontario who are researching the MATTICE family, it has been both exciting and encouraging to be contacted by a descendant of JOHN MATTICE through this Manitoba site. The original query, re-posted below, concerned a descendant of William Mattice. Both John & William were two of Johann Nicholas II Mattice's sons! A descendant of WILLIAM MATTICE: Looking for data about Herbert Theron SMYTH, born July 8, 1910, who married Janet Elliot Kyle on July 10th, 1944, resided perhaps in the area of Brandon or Oak Rivers. Dear Bette - Thanks for your help. I was awaiting a reply from the National Library to fill in any details left before I responded and Sarah Chatfield of the Canadian Genealogy Centre's response is copy/pasted here. I checked her suggestion and it is full of all sorts of information. In reply to your e-mail inquiry of 7 March concerning abbreviations found in the Western Land Grants database, I wish to advise you that the definition of legal subdivision can be found by following this URL: http://www.lobstick.com/PEACE%20COUNTRY%20LAND%20SETTLEMENT%20PROJECT/Complete%20Text%20All%20Links.htm (Section: Link 1: Glossary) The website provides this definition for the term Legal Subdivision: As a township was subdivided into sections and quarter-sections, so too could a quarter-section be subdivided into 16 subdivisions. This was usually the case with fractional quarters where homesteaders on adjoining quarters sought to purchase portions of land as fractional purchases. Identified on the database as "LSD". As for the other terms that we talked about on the phone, I haven't been able to find any definitions for N1/2, PTS or FR. I assume that N1/2 is referring to the north half of a section of land; PTS means the south part of a section of land and FR can either mean the front part of a section of land or that the land was a free grant. True the area's you mention are in the Lisgar area but in 1881 I found that our ancestors who lived latter in Lisgar are recorded in Marquette. That area did not become a part of Lisgar till 1901 (I think). Being Selkirk in 1891 and than Lisgar and Selkirk exchanged names and area's. Hope this helps as I was in quit a crontry at one time to find my ancestors around Pilot Mound which should be in the same area.
