I do apologize. I gave out the incorrect link, which is something I normally do not do. The correct web link on the MacTavish and Thom(p)son, Cash, Todd, Stevens/Stevenson information is: A Noble Past - A Glorious Future Again, I do apologize for any inconvenience. Hi everyone, This is my first contact with Manitoba. (Other than being born in the Peg) I am researching information for our family tree and have been looking for information about Killarney c1900. My father, Henry JOLLY lived there with his parents Henry & Emily JOLLY. I believe on a farm in the area. Henry started as an apprentice at a print shop or a newspaper in Killarney, probably about 1920. Is there any info remaining about such a shop or newspaper? Also would like to know if there is a cemetery in the area. Looking for MI of an Adelaide JOLLY who would have been an aunt in the family. Another thing we have been told is that Grandpa JOLLY ran a "Buffalo Farm". Has anyone heard of such a thing? Any history of Killarney would be most welcome. I have been there but I was too young to recall anything much about what I saw. I do remember the mosquitos tho. They were huge! Would Killarney be considered in the Western Region? Thanks for any help. Gerrie now in B.C.
Part III has been added to the information unfolding on the subject surnames. To view the web site, click on the following link: A Noble Past - A Glorious Future Many of our kin in North America have always thought that the surname of Thompson was English. They are many times amazed to find out that it is actually Scottish. Thomson is the Highland spelling and Thompson is the Lowland spelling. Thom(p)son is a variant spelling of MacTavish, which is Clan MacTamhais (MacTamhais - the "son of Thomas"). Clan MacTamhais (MacTamhais is Gaelic for MacTavish) is an proud and ancient Highland Clan, having its roots in the Western Highlands in the very womb of Scotland. Thom(p)sons and MacTavish are the same name. This is not to say that all of the name of Thom(p)son are of the same Clan. That would be found in your own family genealogy. Official web site for Clan MacTamhais (MacTavish) can be found at the following link: Clan MacTamhais The surname of Todd is a sept of Clan MacTamhais, although it is important to note that Todd is a split Clan - either Clan MacTamhais or Clan Gordon. Stevens/Stevenson (and variant spellings) are a sept of Clan MacTamhais. Another surname which is a variant/corrupted spelling from MacTamhais is CASH. Variant spellings (or corrupted spellings) of MacCamish (a corrupted spelling of MacTamhais): CASH, MACASH, MACCAISH(e), MACCASH, MACAVISH, MACCAUSE, MACCAVISH, MACCAWS, MACCAWIS, KASH, MACKAVISH, M'ASH, and others. That is not to say that ALL of those with the surname of CASH come from the same place. That would be found in the research of your own genealogy. However, according to records that I have seen, the surname of Cash comes from MacCamish and MacCamish is a corrupted form of MacTamhais, which is Gaelic for MacTavish. They originated in the western Highlands (in Argyll). One source you might want to read is: Surnames of Scotland by Professor George F. Black (NOTE: G. means Gaelic. I have included the page number in the book that each item is found on.) MACASH. An uncommon form of MacCash, q.v. (pg. 455) MACAVISH, MacCause, MacCavish, MacCawis, MacCaws. In G. MacThamhais, son of "Tammas", the Scottish form of Thomas. (p. 456) MACCAISH (curr.). See under MacCash. (p. 462) MACCASH, MaCash, MacCaish. Perthshire surnames, probably contracted forms of MacTavish, q.v. John M'Ash, sheriff mair in Crieff, c. 1700, was son of Duncan M'Ash in Monyvaird. Marion M'Cash died in 1598. Hector McCaishe was one of those holding the castle of Dunivaig against Bishop Knox, 1616 (or 1614). Findlay McCaish in Auchnafrie, Glenalmon, 1662, and Donald M'Caish in East Lethendee, Glenalmon, 1682. Andrew M'Cais in Tombae, parish of Callender, 1666. (pg. 466) MACTAVISH. From G. Mac Tamhais, a form of MacThamhais, 'son of Tammas,' the Lowland Scots form of Thomas. Mactavishes are numerous in Argyllshire. The Craignish MS. Says the MacTavishes or Clan Tavish of Dunardarie descend from Tavis Corr. Doncan M'Thamais was one of those cited in 1355 to give evidence regarding the lands of Glassre in Argyllshire (HP., II, p. 139). Duncan McTawisch was tenant of half of Kernach, Strogartnay, 1480 (ER, IX, p. 564). Donald duin Mc tawys made reversion to Evar Campbell of Strouquhour, 1488 (HP., IV, p. 20). Thomas McTaevis, charter witness at Kenaach, 1515 (HP., IV, p. 24), Alexander M'taus in 1589 had custody of Ellanwirrich as constable (Wardlaw, p. 184). The Mactavishes of Stratherrick are considered a sept of the Frasers. M'Taveis 1672, McThavish 1676. (pg. 566) I hope this is of some help to your researching the root of your name, as typed above. Need help from a translator. I received two responses to a query I sent to Cernovitz, in Ukranian and in Russian. Seeing as I send my message in English, I expect they say something to the effect of "I don't understand you" but I would like to know that for certain. Is there anyone on this list who can read Ukranian or Russian and is willing to look at them and give me the gist of what they say? Bette

There is a website for Canadian Vital Statistics Offices at www.gov.ab.can/ma/reg/vs/sa.htm. I phoned the Manitoba Division for the forms to obtain a birth certificate; when I faxed my request, they phoned me to tell me they didn't have enough info to do a search and they didn't charge me. They were very helpful on the phone, and just this week I have resubmitted my request. Good luck! Hi all! I spent my day at the archives today and found very interesting information about James Sangster and Mary Flett's children. I thought I would share with you all! Before, I had written that James and Mary had 4 children: Ethel, John Joseph, Marie Agathe and William. I also assumed that Ethel was the eldest. I was proven wrong today! While looking at baptismal records, it was indicated that Marie Agathe was baptised in 1877, however she was 4 years old, therefore, she was born in 1873. John Joseph was born in late 1875 (he was baptised when he was 6 months old). I also discovered that Ethel was married when she was a minor. The priest had written that they had to annouce the wedding 4 times and that parental consent on both sides had been given. Judging by this information, James and Mary were still alive in 1892. As well, I found out that they were members of the St. Boniface parish. In a another coincidence, for three above children, all their godparents were Metis! (this renewed my hope to find the Metis link) and that one of the godparents may have adopted William Sangster (since there was mention of the Petrino family) Unfortunately, I didn't have the chance to check out William Sangster's wedding certificate. Anyways, I hope you all have a great week-end!! Lise
Thanks for the used books web site Alan. I'll give it a look. Ron Note to all: In my original email sseking info about a Dr. Russ Davies and an Edith Vanderburgh, I was incorrect. Should have read Margaret Vanderburgh. The Edith, I believe, refers to an Edith Cram and her husband. I have a couple of snapshots of the latter when visiting Stroud ON in the 40s I believe, probably post war. Regret the errors. My memory was playing tricks. Has that habit some times of late.
