Hi Patricia, Thank you very much for the Whitemouth, Elma, Manitoba film numbers. When I looked at the LDS microfiche I was very confused. I didn't know how to find out what district these towns were in. Colleen Perry
Greetings, Lois: It is very easy. Just go to the Library and ask for the Inter-Library Loans Co-ordinator. Then give the co-ordinator all the details you have about what it is you wish to order in. They'll bring in any books or m/f's that are available. Books and microfiches usually arrive within a week or ten days, films may take several weeks depending on how long the queue is for those which you are ordering. (The Library must have a m/f reading machine.) Archives of Ontario sets a limit of three films per person at one time, and only issues them for two-weeks per order, with a possible two-week renewal. National Archives of Canada is more flexible as to quantity, and sends them for six weeks. The downside of NAC's flexibility, is that the wait in queue is often longer. Census m/f's are ordered through NAC (but the co-ordinator probably knows that). Kind Regards, Patricia Sherman lois remillard wrote: > > Hello I am really green at this..How does one order anything from a > district..especially birth records etc or anything from a library??
For 1881, I believe that both are in the Eastern Extension, and that is m/f# C-13283 through C-13284. For 1891 and 1901, I think that they are in the Subdistrict of La Broquerie (Provencher District), and films are T-6294 (1891), T-6434 (1901-nominal) and T-6438 (1901-agricultural). The Hudson's Bay Company Archives are accessible online at: http://www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/hbca/index.html Its archives are owned by the Government of Manitoba and administered as a division of the Provincial Archives of Manitoba in Winnipeg. They're a bit slow in responding to inquiries (6 to 8 weeks) but they're very thorough. You should receive an acknowledgement by email in a week or two after your initial inquiry. Make sure you provide all the information you have regarding dates, ships, locations, and any other pertinent information. I've accessed a lot of HBC info on my own family in Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan going back to the 1700's. This is a HUGE archive, and most data is not in digital form. They receive a lot of requests so all searches are done manually. Hence the wait. I'm very interested in this topic. I lived in Churchill for eleven years. The community of Churchill today is located on the east side of the Churchill River. In 1813, the settlement was on the west side, at and/or adjacent to Fort Prince of Wales. I don't recall ever seeing any cemetery on the west side, although logic would say that there is at least one. Since there's no bridge or ferry across the river, it isn't common for residents to go across. In summer, one uses a small boat, and in winter, one uses a dog-sled. In most instances, this crossing is only done by tourists and guides wishing to visit the old Fort, and they seldom stray any distance from that point. I have visited the rock inscribed by Samuel Hearne, which is really the only other destination of great interest. As far as records of the passengers on the Prince of Wales, if it isn't listed by ISTG, or on one of the Red River Settlement sites, I think the best bet for finding it is at the Hudson's Bay Company archives at Hudson's Bay House in Winnipeg. These archives may have been transferred to (or be held in duplicate at) Manitoba Provincial Archives on Vaughan Street in Winnipeg. I suggest making a call or writing to the Provincial Archivist, and/or to Hudson's Bay House. Although "The Bay" was sold to the Northwest Company about ten years ago, I think that H.B. House still exists (it has been about 15 years since I lived in Winnipeg, so I'm not sure). Maggie :re: My gggggrandfather John Sutherland came on the Prince of Wales to Churchill in 1813. My understanding is he died soon after his arrival. If he died soon after his arrival, the odds are that he is buried in Churchill. If he died while on the way to the Red River Settlement however, then I suppose he could be almost anywhere on that route. Also,is there web site telling the story of The Red River Settlement? A Google search turns up 1,650 sites for "Red River Settlement." Just what do you want to know about it? Bette

I am researching the CZARNY surname from the Elma & Whitemouth, Manitoba area. Stefan Czarny changed his name to Stephen CHARNEY at some unknown point in time. I would like to order the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census from this area. Can anyone tell me which films to order? Colleen Perry in Minneapolis, Minnesota cmpsoft@aol.com
In 1881 and 1891 Carberry is in the Marquette District: 1881 = C-13283 1891 = T-6293 In 1901 it is in the Macdonald District: 1901 = T-6433 (Nominal) & T-6437 (Agricultural) Patricia Sherman K/H Start wrote: > > I am trying to help a friend get some basic information. I am trying to help a friend get some basic information. Her ancestors were the family of Nathaniel FITZSIMMONS who lived in Carberry. This family may have moved there in time for the 1881 census, and for sure, by the 1891 census. (I know they were in Bruce County, Ontario in 1871, and have that information already.) I understand there are indexes available - would anyone be kind enough to check those out for me please? Nathaniel and his wife had 5 boys and 2 girls, and they could have moved out on their own by these later census periods. I have checked the Lookup page and don't see these indexes listed... I also searched the FHL catalogue, trying to figure out the correct film for the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census records for the Carberry area. Since I am unfamiliar with the area, I would appreciate it if someone could assist with this. Thank you for your assistance. Karen in Abbotsford BC
Hi Shirley..... Thanks for your reply regarding George Welby McCubbin. Since I have just started researching the McCubbin's, the only thing I know for sure is that he is the son of James Wesley McCubbin, b. 1844, at Saltfleet, Wentworth Co., Ontario and later moved to Manitoba. Will keep your info as it could possibly tie in later. Thanks again. Delores
