Greetings, Jackie: I believe that a good place for you to start would be the 1901 Census of Stonewall if that is where they were living at the turn of the last Century. Stonewall is a community located within Rockwood Municipality, and will be found as a subdistrict of Selkirk, on the National Archives microfilm#: T-6435. This census provides you with the place of birth *and birth-date* for everyone that was included within that district in 1901. It won't help you with kiddies born later, for that you need access to the post-1901 Census -- and that's a whole another story, as you'll quickly learn from Muriel Davidson's postings. Best Regards, Patricia Sherman Jackie Nana wrote: > > HELLO, > I am new to this list and new at genealogy. > Seeking information from SKS with access to 1900-1915 church records in > STONEWALL,HARTNEY, TREHERNE, MACGREGOR OR HIGH BLUFF, on the family of REV. > D.M. Alan, I've scanned the Camerons and Campbells in Minnedosa and Neepawa and don't make a connection, neither to Rapid City nor to a Pratt family. However, if the family didn't stay in Minnedosa for some time, enough to be 'called upon' to write a family history in 1983, then they probably aren't included in this history book. Have you found them in the 1881 census yet? He's might be there if he didn't sell his land until 1882. The records for the Minnedosa land titles office are probably house in Neepawa now. You might try that. Or query the museum in Minnedosa and ask them what records they have for Rapid City at that time. And, if you get any more news, please get back to us. Bette
Alan, I expect there were property assessments done in the west but I couldn't swear to it. I've never checked it out. However, the homestead records are somewhat like a trail of property assessments on the farm. Each homesteader had to 'prove up' the land, so he filed annually what he'd done after he applied for his patent up to the time he got his deed. I also expect there must have been property assessments at the municipal level because they must have used such for realty tax purposes. You might query a reference librarian in Wpg or U of Manitoba - or query a land titles office in Manitoba. I expect they can tell you. BTW, where was your John Colbert in 1881 and 1891? Have you checked those census records? Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Bette
Hi everybody, once again. Looking for anyone named Lockeridge. Received information some time ago about my great-grandfather, Joseph Lockeridge, buried in Westhope Cemetery Sept. 16, 1900. Also a Thomas Lockeridge, 1872-1936, buried in St. Johns Cemetery, also near Bethany. Apparently there is a book containing history about the Bethany area. I'd like to purchase a copy or have someone look up more Lockeridge history for me. These Lockeridges are driving me crazy! Any information appreciated. Nancy Butterfield in Chinook, Washington, USA
Thanks Bette; I am thinking the same thing. I was hoping to cross reference with census info but John was not in Manitoba for the 1871 census and had moved to the City of Winnipeg by the 1901 census! Were any property assessments done in the west? In Ontario I was able to use the yearly property assessments to track one family. Bette; Thanks for the information! It is great to get a picture of the era. I notice that John Cameron is not mentioned. Joseph Young's parents stayed in Ontario and are buried there(William Young and Eliza Hobbes). Mary Ellen Campbell's ( husband - John Cameron) parents were John Pratt Campbell and Margaret Fitzgerald. John Pratt Campbell homesteaded on the Saskatchewan River near Rapid City. He came "out from Ontario" in 1878 and then sold the land in 1882. He mentions paying his $320.00 at the Minedosa land office. Apparently he applied for abandonment because in the spring of 1880 he had a lake 20 feet deep. Then John Pratt Campbell left to homestead in Saskatchewan. His son Frederick had a homestead in Manitoba, as well as a David Campbell who might have been related. If any of these characters are mentioned, I would love the information! Thanks again, Alan >

Hello Jackie: The actual ledger of baptisms, marriages and deaths for the Presbyterian Church in Stonewall is at the Manitoba Archives in Winnipeg. If I recall correctly is covers the period 1882/3 to about 1916. The records for the United Church in Stonewall were lost in a fire some time during the 1970's I believe. Unfortunately the Town of Stonewall does not hold any records of who is buried in the graves in the cemetery, only the purchaser of the plot. The Manitoba Genealogical Society in Winnipeg has records of the burials. This information has been taken from the gravestones. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Ann

Alan, If your John Colbert was a homesteader he might have received land through the Domion Land Grants which you can search through Arhvicianet at the National Archives of Canada site at: http://www.archives.ca There are several John Colberts listed in the Dominion Land Grants but the one mostly likely, in my opinion, to be the land you are looking for is NW-21-5-20-W1. However, I would suggest you check it out yourself. Bette
Alan, There is on pg. 181 of "Minnedosa Valley Views": "Shortly after his arrival in the Valley in 1879, J.S. Armitage built a flour mill and a saw mill. The equipment was drawn from Winnipeg on sleighs and dumped of in snow drifts. Supervisor of the mill was Wm. Herriott, of Galt, Ontario, who stayed for two years working with Barclay and Isaac Armitage. "The mill whistle" wrote Ed Brown "was first blown on July 21, 1880." The first lumber sawn was turned out June 15, 1880 and the first grist ground about October 26 of the same year. All the wheat grown that year on the Assiniboine (where Brandon now stands) east as far as Sydney and west to Birtle and Fort Ellice, was brought to be ground in Minnedosa. In 1882 Armitage sold the mill to John Douglas, who had recently bought out Dr. McIntosh's milling interests at Rapid City but held a lien on it. Employees included J.D. Shuttleworth, head sawyer; Peter Stewart, logging foreman, brother Ed Douglas, George Black and L. Crossland. A leaky granary, which spoiled much grain, plus a heavy loan to finance a timber purchase up river, bankrupted the firm. Miller John Lamont and McDonald leased the mill in 1884 planning to employ Douglas, ordered new millstones and rollers and began operations. In the meantime Odanah miller James Jermyn convinced Armitage to relinquish his rights and bought the property at a tax sale with possession March, 1885. Jermyn hired Wm. Mann as miller, Moses Stewart, head engineer, and Frank Baker assistant. Wood from upriver fired the engine, and like his predecessor, he bought wheat, ground it and sold the flour, bran, and charged the farmer for grinding their wheat with payment in grist. By 1886 John MdDougall was miller. In 1887 Jermyn asked Odanah Municipality for a $5,000 grant to install rollers, and despite opposition, received it. In November 1899 he sold the mill to Frank and Ed Pearson. A syndicate acquired the mill in 1898 and rented it to Atkinson who operated until 1904, one employee being a Mr. Miller. Another change in ownership saw McIntyre taking over, employing William Wilkinson, Mr. Punchard and Ed R. Turner. Fire destroyed the mill in March, 1909. Guess that's what it was... : ) Who are the parents of Joseph Young and Mary Ellen Campbell. There are Young's and Campbell's listed in this book. Bette
