Hi list, Can anyone out there help me? I am looking for photographs of King Edward St in Saint James, Taken in the 1920's. I have tried Libraries in Winnipeg and Manitoba, but had no replies to my enquires, My Grand Father lived there in 1914.at number 281, Thanks to a Genealogical act of kindness I am now the proud owner of a recent photograph of his house, I would dearly love to see how the house looked back then. I would be very grateful if there is anyone who could help me with this. Thank you in advance. Lynda Redfern.
Lynda: Did you try the Legislative library in Winnipeg. They have some old photos. I believe someone on the list gave the email address for them earlier today. sorry I do not have it Janet St. Albert, AB Lynda Redfern wrote: > Hi list, > > Can anyone out there help me? > > I am looking for photographs of King Edward St in Saint James, Taken in the 1920's. > I have tried Libraries in Winnipeg and Manitoba, but had no replies to my enquires, > > My Grand Father lived there in 1914.at number 281, Thanks to a Genealogical act of kindness I am now the proud owner of a recent photograph of his house, > > I would dearly love to see how the house looked back then. > > I would be very grateful if there is anyone who could help me with this. > Thank you in advance. > > Lynda Redfern. > > ==== CAN-MANITOBA Mailing List ==== > CAN-MANITOBA-L Mailing List > http://www.rootsweb.com/~canmb/canmanitoba.htm > > ============================== > The easiest way to stay in touch with your family and friends! > http://www.myfamily.com/banner.asp?ID=RWLIST1
Hi, Would anyone be able to advise me on where to look first for an obituary in Winnipeg? I don't know which paper to order in to the library. The death was in 1961, could anyone please tell me which paper would have been around then? Thanks Brenda
Bette: There were newspapers in Winnipeg and area in 1886. The Winnipeg/Manitoba Free Press was around. It is available from the Legislative Library via interlibrary loan. You will need to know the month and year and they will be able to send it to you. I have never tried it so I am not sure how long it will take. Also if you are close to a university they may carry copies of the reels, I know the University of Alberta has the Free Press as does the Edmonton Public Library. But be forewarned obits are not always together or easy to find. I almost went blind looking for a couple in the 1870's. Sometimes they are news articles sometimes they are just brief mentions. I hope this helps. Janet St. Albert, AB Bette Kosmolak wrote: > Is it possible to get an obituary for a death in 1886 in Winnipeg? Bette, I was able to obtain copies of obituary notices from the Legislative Library of Manitoba, refserv@mb.sympatico.ca. I furnished the date of death and area of death and they researched the newspapers. There is a charge for copies This was 3 years ago and there was a minimum charge of $3.00 plus taxes for microprints. Hi Bette, The Winnipeg Public Library has copies of the Manitoba Free Press at the Centennial Branch. They are on microfilm and the dates are from July 1874 - Dec.1931. You may find it in there. Hi again, If SKS has access to the 1881 Selkirk census, I'm trying to find information on George E. FORSYTH. According to Family Tree Maker, the film no. is C13282 and the volume/page no. is 8. Not sure if this is helpful, or not. I appreciate any help you can give me on this. George has been very mysterious, and I'm really hoping this is the right man. Hi all, If SKS has access to a copy of Henderson's Directory of Manitoba for 1886, I'd like to know what it says on George FORSYTH or anyone named ROUNSEFELL. If the Family Tree Maker CD that I have is accurate, it should say something on page 306. I contacted the Vital Statistics Agency to get some information on requesting birth and death records. It seems I have to find someone who qualifies as immediate next of kin even though the person was born (and died) in the mid 1880's. Here's the kicker: the application will only get me the certificate, which doesn't really have any information on it. (and still costs $25) If I want to get a copy of the registration, this is what the application says, "Restricted certified photocopies are rarely needed by citizens and are by law for restricted use only. If you believe you need such a copy, a detailed explanation must be given when requesting this document as to why it is required." Since the individual I need the information on is the daughter of my great-great-grandfather, I'm not sure what to tell the Vital Statistics people that would induce them to send me a copy of the registration. Any suggestions? Katrina Okinawa, Japan ~~~~~~~~~ R O U N S E F E L L One-Name Study at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~rounsfel/ My entire family tree at: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/~patnkat/
You might want to check with Vital Stats as to when their info starts for death registration. It might even just start in the 1890s sometime. Otherwise you mgith have to go to church/cemetery records. Jayne Paradis
Hi group, I have an ancestor who, according to word-of-mouth, left Ontario and went to Souris, Manitoba. I have no idea when this happened, but I speculate it may have been after 1890. This fellow's name is THOMAS HOWDEN BRYANS and he was born in Port Hope, Ontario in 1856. The last Ontario census I can find him in was 1871 when he was 15, but he could have been in others after that. I was wondering - - is there a kind soul out there who might have a Souris census sitting at their fingertips who might do a look up for me? Trouble is, I don't even have a date, but knowing when he WASN'T listed is almost as important as knowing when he WAS. Also, is there on-line searchable data for Souris? I haven't been able to find anything like that so far, but I'm sure there must be 'something' hiding in a cyber nook or cranny. THANKS! Lynda in Minnesota
Hello all does anyone know if there is a searchable database that covers the Wallace area ? I am trying to research my gfathers(William LEECH) line. Thanks in anticipation Judith (LEECH)
I applied for my g-grandfather's death certificate. I indicated I was his g-granddaughter and I wanted the certificate for family history research & family health records. I most certainly am not the "immediate next-of-kin" as my Dad is alive and I know he has cousins that would qualify as "closer" kin than I. I don't think they're that picky. Tell them that you're a g-g-niece (or whatever). Apply for the death cert. first. That's usually easier. Once they issue a death cert. to someone, I think they're more likely to later issue a birth cert. By the way, the death certificate had loads of info on it (date & cause of death, birth & parents info)...unfortunately supplied by my grandfather who had no clue where or when his father was born or what his grandmother's name was......sigh. The government will give you a hard time. Ha. They likely don't have anything for 1800 there. But I'd forget about them. In Ontario you pay for births records in past 95 years, Marriage past 80 and death past 70. That means prior records are in public domain. Our library has BMD index for Ontario. Once you find the number you can obtain a photo copy from LDS for a minimum fee of $2. They like to see the words NEXT OF KIN on the app and something general such as PERSONAL RECORDS is only excuse you need. Always ask for a long form e.g. a certified copy of original document. You don't want a pretty certificate that someone may make errors on when completing. I would say you are the only living next of kin. I'm sure Manitoba is the same way as ON so ask if SKS on list has access to index for death records 1885 or so and give place, county, province and have them to write to you off list. Then send them name and any other info 0ff list. This is so a dozen people don't waste time looking for you. Once you have registration # then you can get info on how to get a photo copy of original from LDS. Believe info is in Ontario-L archives if you do a search you should find it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patrick & Katrina Lawson" <patnkat2@konnect.net> To: <CAN-MANITOBA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 30, 2000 5:34 PM Subject: [CAN-Manitoba] Vital Statistics Question > I contacted the Vital Statistics Agency to get some information on > requesting birth and death records.
