I would much appreciate help in trying to trace the lost years (1905 to 1915) of Ernest HEATHER. He was born in 1891 in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England and emigrated ca 1905 to Canada with his uncle Thomas Heather. He settled somewhere in the Brandon-Medora-Lauder area of Manitoba. Papers from the Canadian National Archive show that when he enlisted in the Canadian army in 1915 he was medically examined at Medora and his attestation certified at Brandon. He served with the 19th Bn Canadian Infantry (1st Central Ontario Regiment) and was killed near Arras in 1918. A handkerchief handed down in the family (he would have been my uncle) is embroidered "A souvenir of Medora" I have traced his uncle Thomas Heather who farmed near Lauder until his death in 1926. But there is no trace of Ernest there and the ten years 1905-1915 are a blank; his enlistment papers only give the clue that he was farming. Any help from Manitoba listers as to his whereabouts, mention on any war memorial inscription etc would be very welcome. Frank Heather, Surrey, England

Nov 4, 2000 The national archives at www.archives.ca under passenger lists on ArchivaNet have some passenger lists from that era. It was not required to keep lists at that time. Happy hunting! I am not familiar with Manitoba, and would appreciate some help. My gg grandfather had a son John [Cartier] Lafrance who died 1907 in St.Pierre-Joly, Manitoba but another relative found information that says St. Malo, Manitoba. How can I find exactly where? Also would their have been a local newspaper that I could find an obituary. I am desperate to find information. Thank you Norma wasmer@tcei.com

This is good news. Ancestry.com is offering the Winnipeg census of 1901. Wahoo! - have fun - Bette. WINNIPEG DSITRICT, MANITOBA CENSUS, 1901: WINNIPEG CITY Winnipeg is located at The Forks (where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet), and its name is Cree for "muddy water." The area was a meeting place for aboriginal people for thousands of years. This database contains more than 42,000 entries of residents in Winnepeg during the census year 1901. It lists each person's full name, relationship to the head of the household, full date of birth, and birthplace, as well as year of immigration to Canada (if the person was not Canadian by birth). The database also includes the National Archives film number, division number, page, and family number to help researchers obtain a copy of the actual record, if desired. Source Information: Hewitt, Doneen, compiler. "Winnipeg District, Manitoba, Canada Census, 1901: Winnipeg City." [database online] Provo, UT: Ancestry.com, 2000-. Original data: Government of Canada. "1901 Canada National Census." Canada: Canada National Archives, 1901.
