Hello David, I borrowed this from: http://winnipeg.about.com/aboutcanada/winnipeg/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=h ttp%3A%2F%2Fwinnipeg411.com%2Fhistory%2Findepth%2F The expansion of the province coincided with the growth of Winnipeg. The assurance of a railroad and forthcoming CPR jobs created a boom that led to the city's population reaching 14,000. At some points in 1882, land in Winnipeg was more expensive than lots in Chicago or New York City. During this boom, the first telephones were installed downtown and a horse-drawn street railway was created. But the boom soon ended, leading to the failure of over 100 businesses. Winnipeg's economy survived the crash, and continued to prosper. Soon the city was filled with immigrants from all over Europe. But the city was divided; the railroad crossed the river at Point Douglas, cutting Winnipeg in two. The southern part was home to many of the Ontarian and British settlers, while the North End was home to most of the other peoples, such as Poles, Ukrainians, and Jews. My Irish grandfather settled in the St. James area. Hope this is helpful! Hello, Here is another one! This is a new one posted to Ancestry.com's database today. Free until December 25. Victoria PROVENCHER DISTRICT, MANITOBA CENSUS 1901: HANOVER AND UNORGANIZED TERRITORY Hanover is located in southeastern Manitoba. In the early 1900s, more than half of the residents of this municipality were born in Manitoba, and nearly 800 residents immigrated from Russia. This database lists more than 3,100 residents of Provencher District (#10), Manitoba in 1901, including the following subdistricts: Hanover (D) and Unorganized Territory (K). Residents living in unorganized territory account for approximately 125 names in the database. The database lists each person's full name, relationship to the head of the household, full date of birth, and birthplace, as well as year of immigration to Canada (if not Canadian by birth). It also includes the National Archives film number, division number, page, and family number to help researchers obtain a copy of the actual record, if desired. Hi everone, I've just put in my GEDCOM on the rootsweb.com World Connect Project. So far, I've collected 10,935 individuals in my database and I'm still not done yet. I also plan to put my Gedcom on this website www.my-ged.com which I think will be a webpage database. If you look under publisher's list, watch for this username code "ndescottes" in the very near future, hopefully before Christmas. Posted on: Manitoba, Canada Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/Canada/Manitoba/General/2402 Surname: McKay ------------------------- I am looking for an Ina McKay who was living in Deloraine, Manitoba about the year of 1948. Her father was Donald Robert McKay. Her mother I believe was Donalds first wife and she passed away before 1901. It does not appear that she was raised by her father , perhaps by family on her mothers side. She may have been born in Nova Scotia. It does not appear that she ever married, so she would still be Ina McKay, any information would be greatly received. Thanks Sincerely Deborah
