Sandy: The prime or principle or W1 is located at 97 degrees 30' west which I believe near Winnipeg. I can not remember if it is just east or west of Winnipeg. W2 and W3 are located in Saskatchawan. Norma: Eden is about 10-15 miles north of Neepawa. I checked my local history book of Neepawa for Duxbury but no listing. There might be an Eden local history book. There were a lot of them published in the 1970's and 1980's. I am not sure who would contact to find out about the local history book. The Neepawa library might have one. Hi and Merry Christmas to all - I am new to this site and I am researching my grandfather, Alfred Arthur Duxbury born 1882 in Erin, Ontario (Wellington Co.) He was the son of Robert Joseph Duxbury and Emma J. Dunett. He left Manitoulin Is. around l7 yrs. of age and went to Dauphin,Manitoba. He worked at many things - c. l900 he worked in a Railroad Camp in Swan River, a sawmill in Pine river, a fishing boat on Lake Winnipegosis and he apprenticed as a blacksmith. In l904 he married Lily May Bickle in Winnipegosis. She was born June 1887 Prattford, Cavalier Co. North Dakota. They were members of the Salvation Army. They had 7 children: Joseph b. l906, Emma b. l907, Charles b. l909, Roy b. l9ll, Norman George b. l9l3 (my father), Mary and May (twins) b. l926. In l907 he opened a hardware and tinsmithing business. In l909 he opened a blacksmith shop. In l9l9 he started an undertaking business in Minnedosa. Grandma died in l939 (buried Neepawa) and grandpa remarried to Mrs. George McCracken of Eden (location?) in l942. He died l952, buried Neepawa. Would love to hear from anyone who is familiar with these names. Cheers, Norma in Ontario.
Gail, I'd like to thank you for this small insight to a Winnipeg winter. I just learned my great aunt Jessie Hollis Ross was a domestic servant living in Winnipeg in 1901 with the William Ross family. She was only about 13 at the time. I can imagine her during a Winnipeg winter. For girls of her station, it must have been hard, but I'm sure there were moments when she could have maybe done some of the things you mention. If anyone has any information about this William Ross family or Jessie's parents, Donald and Jessie Mae Hollis Ross between 1894-1901, I'd appreciate hearing from you. My email is mscaleb@texas.net. Wishing you all the best from a certainly different (and warmer) climate, Sharon Shumate, Austin, TX Gail Peltz wrote: > I live in Winnipeg and the Red flows through here but I can tell you > that it certainly is frozen. Hi Elaine Under the Dominion Land Grant Legal Descriptions, the file reel number is C-6428. I am just going to have to order this Grant from the Archives. How would I go about finding out what happened to this Land Grant e.g. when it changed hands after my gt. grandfather had it? Thanks for all your help PatG I can tell you right away by the W3 at the end of the description that isn't in Manitoba. W3 means west of the third meridian(which is out in BC). The meridian it is referring to is just west of Winnipeg Manitoba and most of western MB is in the 1st Meridian. BUT -I figured some part of that location had to be right. I went to the web site for searching geographical names http://geonames.nrcan.gc.ca/english/cgndb.html and did a search and found an Overflowing River in Manitoba but the land description was 18-48 - 25 W (There was no 3 in behind the W) When I did a map search for the location it showed it to be at the north western tip of Lake Winnipegosis / Lake Manitoba. On my AAA map book there is a Overflowing River town indicated. It appears to be about 50-60 kilometers south of The Pas, Manitoba. Based on your land description and the location of the town - your ancestor lived about 26 miles straight north and 1 miles west of Overflowing River. The next quesiton then is what area is Overflowing River in the 1901 census. The closest town I found to that area was the Swan River area which was in the Marquette area. There is an Unorganized Territory for Marquette as well (There was no listing for The Pas). My guess would be to start with NAC MF reel T-6434 which seems to incorporate this area. I hope this helps - the above web site is wonderful for trying to figure out where places are located.
