    1. [CAN-Manitoba] CHURCH OR CEMETERY AT LAKE WINNIPEG?
    2. Viola Seward
    3. Can some one enlighten me with a Church or Cemetery at Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba? Trying to find out where my ggggrandfather Duncan McDougall Jr was laid to rest. In all records i have received on my Duncan it is stated he died a hard death. Which could have been T.B. or Cancer. Now Cancer runs rampant in our family so to me he could have died of Cancer. But a guess is worthless!! Does any one on list know of George McDougall the reputed or adopted son of Duncan McDougall Jr? George was given some thing according to Duncans will so i assume he was his legal son. Duncan swore he was not married but married Iliche the Princess of Wales and daughter of the Chinook Chief Concomley. Had son Caleb. Married a lester lady then married Marie Landry and had daughter Catherine in 1818. Any one have any info on my Duncan? Thanx. Viola.

    1. [CAN-Manitoba] Census Records?
    2. mscaleb
    3. I rarely send these type messages out, but thought you all would enjoy this. Even though it's in jest, it might closely explain why the census records sometimes look the way they do: "The Census Taker's Home! (from the Sunday Afternoon Rocking series) Well, I'm surely glad to be home, that I am. I tell you another day like this one and I am good mind just to fill them papers out on memory and be done with it. Here, put these socks over there next to the fire to dry out, will you? Got down yonder this mornin' and everyone in Household 451 through 486 was gone. Some big shindig goin' on down there. Good thing the folks in 441 could tell me who they all was. Here, reckon you could go over some of the writin' on this here page? Got smeared a bit in the rain. I think you can 'cipher most of it out. Then them folks down in the holler got suspicious over a census. Said, and derned if they had a point, what difference did it make who they was? Was them guvment folks up in Warshington going to come down here to say howdy do? So they finally let me write down they last name and first initial, but I think they wuz havin' a bit of fun with me when they listed who lived in the house. Saw some winkin' goin' on and I believe I got the same house a youngins in two or three places. It been a day, woman. Honey, git that paper out of Johnny's mouth, will ya? I worked all day on that thing, and no call to let him go chewin' it up. Went up the river a piece and tried to get that done 'fore it come a downpour, but run into trouble there, too. Ole Man Jenkins' cur dog run me off and I tell you, ain't no call to get eat up over such a thing as this. They ort to be a limit what a man does for his country. Was lucky a man down the road mostly knew Jenkins was nigh on sixty years old and was living there with his woman and five youngins from his first marriage plus a passel from the second. We give em good Christian names. Best be doin' something 'bout this pen. It give out on me halfway through. See you havin' trouble, too. Johnny! Hand that here, boy! And I tell you I would ruther fight grandpap's British than mess with that feller out on the ridge. He got out his shotgun soon as he seen me comin' and I went t'other direction. Had Jones tell me about him instead, and he didn't rightly know the feller's first name. Said they called him "Squirrel", and it was ok just to put that cause wasn't nobody around here claimin' him no how, and they for sure didn't want the guvment knowin' there was any relationship. That coffee done? Then got over to Smiths, and ole Hoss was in a nervous fit so wasn't no getting information there. His woman havin' another youngin and he looked like he could run right through me when I went to askin' how many youngins he had now. Hightailed it out of there, and Miz Hart helped me straighten that household out. Think we got most of the names straight, and as he has had a youngin a year for the last ten, ages purty close too. Now look what Johnny went and done! I tell you, next time this come around I ain't gonna be no where in sight. Farmin's a heap easier, and I figger they're folks 'round here what can read and write and 'cipher and ain't no good fer nothing else we can spare for this foolishness. Pass me another 'tater, will you?" 3. Viola: I was not sure the dates that you were looking for but 2 places to start would be the Catholic Church, sorry I do not know an address, and the Diocese of Rupertsland. The Diocese have records dating back to 1820 for baptism, marriage and burial. They covered most of Manitoba until the 1900's. The address is: The Archives of the Anglican Church of Canada Diocese of Rupert's Land 935 Nesbitt Bay Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 1W6 204-453-6130 You need an appointment to do the research yourself. They will do it for you for a fee. Janet St. Albert, Alberta Viola Seward wrote: > Good day listers. Am new to list so bear with me please. My > ggggrandfather was Duncan McDougall son of Duncan. 3. Actually, Selkirk is definitely East of the PM. It is almost directly north of Winnipeg (slightly to the east). The PM runs about 30 miles west of Selkirk. 3. Just a note for anyone who is faced with the above situation. Your mail-reader has a trash-can. All deleted mail goes there. If you will set your reader so that the trash doesn't get emptied automatically, you'll be able to retrieve accidentally deleted messages. Another means of retrieving such messages is to use the rootsweb archives. 1. [CAN-Manitoba] Wm Ferguson
    2. Bette Kosmolak
    3. Hi Susan, As Wm. Ferguson was an MLA (Manitoba Legislative Assembly) member, you might try checking with the Manitoba Legislative Library. I expect they can tell you who his children were and possibly you can go down the line from there. Also, you might simply search Canada 411 for any Ferguson's in the Hamiota area. Bette

    1. [CAN-Manitoba] Land records - Selkirk
    2. Bette Kosmolak
    3. Meridel: If your ancestor "homesteaded" - in other words, was the first farmer on the land, you can search homestead records at the National Archives site at : http://www.archives.ca/exec/naweb.dll?fs&0201&e&top&0 Use the link for "Dominion Land Grants," then "Search the Database" Put your surname in the "name" box and try that. If you get too many responses, then try your surname plus W1 (in the Meridian pull down menu) as I suspect Selkirk would be considered in W1. If your ancestor was not likely the first owner on his land, then you will probalby have to contact the nearest Land Titles Office to Selkirk which is likely: Winnipeg Land Titles LL25 - 405 Broadway Winnipeg MB R3C 3L6 phone: (204) 945-2042 fax: (204) 948-2140 If they don't have the records, they can probably tell you who has. Hope that helps. Bette
