I am enlightened by the discussion and explanations of meridians, sections, towships etc as they apply on the Prairies but can somebody answer a couple of questions that keeps puzzling me: How big is a section? How does one relate sections to townships and ranges? One chap tried to tell me that sections replaced townships as latter are known in the east. Thank you. Ron Davies Surrey, BC

Hi Ann, Thamk you so much for the meridians! This is what I copied from the National Archives and as you can see, it leaves a lot to be desired where the meridians are concerned! The choice lists of each search field correspond to the elements included in a legal land descriptions. The multiple choices for each fields are as follows : Sections are divided into four quarters or into sixteen legal sub-divisions. They are numbered from 1 to 37. Townships are numbered from south to north starting at the U.S. border. They are numbered from 1 to 129 and 141. Ranges are numbered from east to west starting from each meridian, except for the west-to-east numbering used for the Principal and East of the Coast Meridians. They are numbered 1 to 34. The Meridians are as follows: * ECM (East of the Coast Meridian) * EPM (East of the Principal Meridian) * W1 (West of the Principal Meridian) * W2 (West of the 2nd Meridian) * W3 (West of the 3rd Meridian) * W4 (West of the 4th Meridian) * W5 (West of the 5th Meridian) * W6 (West of the 6th Meridian) * W7 (West of the 7th Meridian) * WCM (West of the Coast Meridian) THANK YOU !!!!!!!!! Hi listers; I am reseaching the CURRIE name in the vicinity of Dauphin and Gilbert Plains and would like to make contact with anyone doing the same. Alan Campbell
Hi, Viola....have you checked with the Hudson's Bay Company Archives regarding Duncan? Their website is www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/hbca They will do a search of their records providing you give them all relevant information as to dates and locations, etc. If your Duncan was a HBC employee and had shares in the Company, this would definitely be recorded in the archives in Canada and also at the head office in London. As Victoria mentioned, Lake Winnipeg is a huge body of water. Finding someone who lived at Lake Winnipeg or a cemetery would be like trying to find someone who lived beside Lake Superior. Without specific information it would be nearly impossible to find. There are indeed several First Nations around the lake, and there were several trading posts throughout the years, not only The Hudson's Bay Company, but the Northwest Company as well as several independent traders such as Revillon Freres. Remember we're talking about at least a two hundred year period of heavy trading. The best way to find out about Duncan would be to access the HBC archives and first find where he was posted and then go from there. The fort(s) where he was posted may likely not be there anymore, but the HBC kept fairly good records in the post journals. The more you know about his connection with the Company, the more likely you are to find out about where he lived, etc. If you send an inquiry to the archives, the waiting time is roughly 6 to 8 weeks due to the volume, but the database is usually researched thoroughly. At the National Archives of Canada Dept. of the Interior (Metis Scrip references RG-15) http://www.archives.ca/exec/naweb.dll?fs&02010502&e&top&0 , there are several references to Duncan McDougall in Red River, and several for Catherine at Lac La Biche, Alberta, with connections to Raphael Tremblay, as I recall this was a name you were researching in another list we both subscribe to. As a note, St. James was an English Halfbreed (Metis) parish in the Red River Settlement now known as Winnipeg). It is now a part of west central area of the city. Back then this would have been roughly a day's travel from the south end of Lake Winnipeg. Posted on: Manitoba, Canada Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/Canada/Manitoba/General/2477 Surname: Bean ------------------------- I am looking for Bean's that moved from England to Canada in the 1920's or 1930's. My great-grandfather was Arthur Thomas Bean born in Barnaby Moor (Eston Moor) Yorkshire, England in 1887 and he had a brother Thomas who stayed in England. I believe his mother's name was Anne and his father's name was Matthew. Arthur had many brothers and sisters but because he died when my father was eight years old, my father does not remember him talking about family although he said he had many family member and they moved to the Winnipeg area. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks to everyone on the list who has sent tips about where to look for the Selkirk area land records. I appreciate the help. Maridel C-Brown
Thank you for replying on this. This disappointing news that it is not Whitemouth is I found out where in Norway my grandfather came from (Otness) and that he immigrated to Canada in 1901. I also found out that he got married in Winnipeg. One step at a time - huh? Thanks again for letting me know where they were. Hi Noreen, Sorry to disappoint you, but Whitemouth is listed as EPM. (east of the prime meridian). W3 would be in Saskatchewan, the same longitude as Gull Lake,SK and W4 would be in Alberta, the same longitude as Lloydminster, AB. This Land Grants thing is great if they only had some sort of instructions with it! Good luck! Noreen: Sorry to tell you but the land grants you listed are not in Manitoba. W3 is located in Saskatchewan west of Moose jaw and W4 is the Alberta Saskatchewan border.
