>From the Oak River Post, Oak River, MB (now changed to The Blanshard-Harrison-Strathclair Post, Newdale, Man.) 2/1/1940 HISTORICAL SKETCH OF STRATH. UNITED CHURCH About the year 1876 several families of Scotch descent settled in the vicinity of "The Bend" of the Little Saskatchewan river, and somewhat later other families located at the old Hudson's Bay post at Elphinstone. They, anxious to continue the worship of God according to their Presbyterian upbringing, got together and built a log church at Elphinstone and also one just up the hill near the Sinclair farm, and held service each Sabbath as supplies could be secured. Rev. J. STEWART and Rev. Alex SMITH were among the first ministers. Later Rev. J. MC KAY ministered to these churches and during his time a frame church was erected in Strathclair, in 1886, near where S. MILLMAN's blacksmith shop now stands, it being moved later on and is now used as the Masonic hall. After J. MC KAY left, the following succeeded as ministers: Revs. MARSH, David ROSS, Colin MC KERCHAR, J. MUNROE, Russell DICKIE, MITCHELL, PETERSON, ROGERSON and G. WEIR--who was found dead in bed at Grassie's old boarding house--the late Ralph CONNOR coming up to preach his funeral service. After his sudden death, Rev. MC NIVEN supplied till 1898 when Rev. SUTHERLAND came and remained till February, 1906. During his stay the present fine stone building was erected, and opened for divine service by Rev. BAIRD of Manitoba college Dec. 22, 1901. After Rev. . SUTHERLAND left he was succeeded by Revs. CAMPBELL, HILLIS, WRIGHT, J. H. MARTIN, H. MC KAY, Adam SMITH, J. F. DOUGLAS, down to the present ministry of Rev. G. A. COLPITTS. The present church membership is 90. The present church building, seating about 200 people, is some what reminiscent of an old Scottish lork(?) and it testifies to the self-sacrifice of many of its old members who have passed on, in the many loads of stones hauled for its construction. --Contributed. ========================================== 2/1/1940 (Strathclair) A clean, snappy game was played on Wednesday evening when the Strathclair junior hockey team defeated the Erickson boys by a 6 to 2 score.
