I don't know who started this thread, but I am sure they didn't intend for it to go here. I shouldn't answer, but I can't help it. My ancestors also fought in WW1 and WW2 and even though Canada has it's problems today, I'm sure my ancestors would feel proud to know their grandchildren and great grandchildren can still walk outside their house and down the street without having to see the military walking about as well with machine guns. hello All, I too, do not know why this is being asked, but my heart says to answer. Since starting family history 5 years ago, I now have a sense of 'identity', and I take great pride in the fact that I consider my homeland to be Ireland. I'm quite sure my grand-father would roll over in his grave to learn what he had fought so hard for in WW1, in the CEF, to see the Canada of today. Thank God he doesn't have to. I was born in Canada so I feel Canada is my homeland. However, if I had been born in another country I would probably always have a bond with that country, but consider Canada my home. I feel a bond even now with Ukraine, Norway and Belgium just because my ancestors came from these countries. Hello Nils - I am not certain what it is you are trying to find out but I consider myself Canadian and don't have any desire to be anything else. Canada is where I will always call home. About half of my ancestors are known as Ulster Scots (Scottish implantation of Northern Ireland in the 1600's), and about half are the real thing (Scottish) on a couple of sides. I thank my lucky stars that many generations ago my ancestors had the foresight to make the decisions they did, for whatever reasons, and come here to live. I have a great need to know as much as I can about these people, how they lived etc. and who they are (were). I loved the time spent in Scotland and have a strong desire to visit Northern Ireland but - I am Canadian. I have been searching for lost family from near McDonald and I thought the name might have been Gardner but now I'm curious if it could be Garner. Would there be any connection to the Downing family of MacDonald? Would someone help me out by checking the MacDonald History Book? If there is one? [email protected] Thank you very much. Could you kindly check your cemetery transcriptions for Manitoba to see if you have a Thomas Chicconney (or variant spelling). He moved there from Ontario shortly after WW1 and would probably have died in the 1920s or 30s. Thank you in advance for your kindness.
